Large turnout for this year's Goombay Festival
The Goombay Festival's footprint seemed to shrink this year, down to two blocks on Grand Avenue from Douglas to Hibiscus, but what it lacked in length, it made up in quality.
Thousands showed up to party in the streets. The Miami Herald claims that a couple hundred showed up. We're not sure which calculator they were using, there are a couple of hundred in this photo alone, taken about 3 pm. A friend who was with me on a bike had to leave because he could not navigate the bicycle through the crowds.
There were straw market items and t-shirts and drums and all sorts of goodies.
And the favorite, like every year, is the conch -- conch salad and fritters. People lined up five deep for that. Also for crab and pinchos and jerked chicken and lots of frozen lemonade.
