Coconut Grove = Peacock Nation
You've heard of Key West as the Conch Republic, well, these days, Coconut Grove is the Peacock Republic, or better yet, Peacock Nation. Tropica, by artist Meme Ferre, guards the Woman's Club at the turn on S. Bayshore and McFarlane, as of yesterday.
We spent the afternoon with Heather and Cindy Bettner, and the Peacock Crew, who were installing more peacocks from the Coconut Grove Peacock Tour, all over town. That's Channel 10 cameraman/reporter Victor Oquendo, who is interviewing Heather at Milam's. Victor was along for the ride, all afternoon as well, we had a nice little outing, the bunch of us, just going from location to location, planting peacocks, including this one at left, on Grand Avenue and Commodore Plaza, sponsored by the Miami Heat and created by pop artist Lebo.
My neighbor Denise Jester, also was interviewed by Victor for the evening news, in front of Milam's where this peacock, by artist Eileen Seitz, was placed.
The birds are adding a lot of color to the streetscape.
Here a couple of crew members, including musician and volunteer, Ferro, move the Woman's Club bird around the curve in the road to it's new home.
The colorful peacocks are stopping taffic already.
Plants were even dug up to make room for the peacocks. As we made our way around the Grove, people stopped and smiled and gave their advice as to whether the bird was level or not or in a good place or facing the right direction. It really has become a community project. The rest of them will hit the streets during the coming week. More are being installed today, in fact.
Holly MacDonald-Korth was proud to pose with the Woman's Club peacock, her company JW Korth & Company sponsored this peacock.
