Spreading the July 4th love all week long

We mentioned the Lechon Cook-off, which is part of the Grove's 4th of July celebration this year, but did you know that the 4th of July may turn into a week-long event in the Grove? The committee seems to be going overboard with ideas, so many things happened in one day last year, that it would make sense to stretch them out over a few days.

Remember? There was the Coconut Hunt, the Hot Dog Eating Contest, the picnic at the Barnacle, the concerts in the park and so much more. The incredible fireworks really capped off the day and last year's Coconut Grove 4th of July was one of the best ever.

Being planned this year is the "Bring It On Cook Off Challenge" between the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce and the Coconut Grove Rotary Club. This idea started when "Willie Vega" Executive Director of the Chamber challenged Steve Arch, current President of the Rotary to a lechon cook off.

Willie thought what a better venue than the July 4th event. It will be judged and the winner will get the bragging rights until the next cook off. They will then sell the food to the public and the proceeds are being donated on behalf of both organizations to a local charity which will be announced soon.

If you have been to our previous years 4th of July event here at the Grove- you definitely will see fireworks. The Chamber along with the City have put on the 4th of July since the Biltmore decided not to do them anymore. I think this is our 4th year. We are putting on a show with music, food, kids rides and of course Fireworks. Thanks to the City of Miami, BID, Comm. Sarnoff's office who will provide us with much needed sponsorship to put the event again this year. More info to follow.
