Kayaking for a cause
More than 40 students recently organized and participated in a Kayak-A-Thon just offshore of Shake-A-Leg Miami’s Sea Base, to benefit disaster relief in Haiti. Created and inspired by students in Shake-A-Leg Miami’s After School Program, the students collected over 578 non-perishable items, including medical supplies, canned goods, water and clothing which served as their registration “fee” to participate in the Kayak-A-Thon.
The student kayakers were cheered on by their family and friends, as well as other spectators, who assembled on Shake-A-Leg Miami’s Eco-Islands to get in on the action. Once the students completed the Kayak-A-Thon, having successfully kayaked for two straight hours, the participants joined their supporters for a day of fun in the sun on the Eco-Islands.
Proceeds from the event were given to Shake-A-Leg Miami’s partnering organization, Project Medishare, a non-profit organization co-founded by Dr. Barth Green dedicated to sharing its resources with Haiti in the quest to achieve better quality healthcare and development.
