What's going on at the waterfront

Coastal Systems was hired to work on the Kennedy Park shoreline restoration and to add the floating docks to the area. They will be in charge of design and permitting to put "windows" the mangroves also trim and remove exotic growths to allow for water views.

In addition, the wetland needs to be reconnected to the tidal flow. A bay walk will be added as the final phase of the job. The current dock will be destroyed and the newly constructed dock will return to its 1988 configuration.

The Island E floating dock design and permitting project will apply for 50% matching funds from FIND (Florida Inland Navigation District). Floating docks will be constructed at Scotty’s Landing and The Chart House, which will allow for daily stops by boaters to dock, come in and enjoy the Grove and then leave. It is not a permanent dock for boat storage.

Sounds good. Hopefully they'll do a lot of Mangrove trimmming, and complete erradicate the countless, detrimental Seaside Mahoes.

"In addition, the wetland needs to be reconnected to the tidal flow"

I suppose they refer here to what used to be a cool canal from the boardwalk to the Lemonade truck. It has been engulfed and completely obscured by overgrown Mangroves. I hear that in the 80's it's was a great open little 'river' with clean, flowing water from the bay where the kids would play. CI

Carlos, based on the discussions we have had at the Waterfront Implementation Committee meetings (including our last one when the City's employee who will be supervising the tree trimming was there) all the things you mention above are part of the project. One thing we need to consider ... once the tree trimming happens, we residents need to keep an eye on the shoreline and pick up the mangrove seed pods that could turn into more mangroves. It's not illegal to pick up the pods and throw them away, but once it's a mangrove it's illegal to remove it and would require new permits to trim it. The Mahoes will all be removed. M
