Bringing the block parties back
One place told me they lost $10,000 a month in business due to the ending of the parties, it brought them $2500.00 more each night the party was on. Another place brought in even more on Block Party nights. They also feel cheated and feel that during the tourist season, right now, they could have doubled the amount brought in by snow birds.
One place had the band ready to go, had a large staff on hand and they waited and waited and there was no Block Party. They were never told that it ended. They took a large loss that night because of the extra fees they paid for staff and musicians, not to mention the lost business.
Perhaps they can be brought back monthly if it is too much work or even weekly and perhaps the restaurant owners and merchants can hold the Block Parties themselves without the BID running it. Just a thought. If that much money was being brought in, maybe they can all chip in, hire a party planner and do their own thing.

I think it should be started again on a monthly basis. Things like this are always more appreciated and more looked forward to when they occur only once a month.
The restaurants on Commodore are the ones who decided to nix the block parties.
That is not true, because every restaurant there wants them back. Perhaps the ones that recently closed nixed them, but the ones there now want them.
Please keep in mind that most stories start from a source here. I don't dream them up in my head. I ran the one about Allure's cut a thon for Haiti because they contacted me. I ran this story about hte block party because about four restaurant owners have told me at different times that they want them back and all have asked me why they stopped. So apparently they don't know they that nixed them since they are asking me who nixed them.
And as stated here, one restaurant hired a a band and extra staff for a block party which never happened, so if the resturants nixed them then someone forgot to tell them (the owners and managers) not to hire extra staff and bands.
Have always been for the block part, it gives one more reason for people to come to the Grove.
It is up to the Business with the support of the BID to bring it back.
I am in.

Did Jobie Steppe win some election we all missed???
Who are you and what makes you the authority on every issue the Grape is trying to share with us....
Jobie give it a rest.....
Jobie...come on brother, I thought we hashed this out a few weeks ago babe. I mentioned to you on this blog that rarely do you have a comment or post that you don't spit out venom and rhetoric of your own against whatever "punks" write anonymous jargain. You even told me your wife agreed with me on this very point cuz. Come on my good man, you are a veteran of this great country and shouldn't stoop to anyones level. You're better than that hermono....
Doyle Simmons
Doyle Simmons, yes and I agreed with you then and now. But, and however, if you take a few minutes and read my comments you will clearly see that I ask questions. A question is not a statement, it's a question. Therefore, each individual has the potential of creating an ansswer. Humans, when asked a question, get mad "when" they are forced to come to grips with reality----not mine, but
their(s). I just cause people to think and "brother" do people seem to hate being made to think about reality, not mine, their(s). I'm writing a book about such characters and blogs are the perfect source. The Grape does not like me stimulating commentary in "his blog" and at times get angry at me and tells me so.
Jobie, asking you to not spam the Grapevine by commenting with the same comments on every post is not asking you to stop stimulating commentary.
Grape, I'm not spamming, I'm creating commentary. Please try not to attach negative connotation to my efforts to create a reality in Coconut Grove. Some folks cannot deal with reality, but you as the author should be above it. If you're not afraid, print this. If you are, no problem, I understand.
As a musician who participated in the Block Parties several times, I am for them coming back...but, if the restaurants who benefited from want to they can hire the musicians themselves and provide a venue for them. I know for a fact, once we had set up at the entry way to a restaurant and that helped bring people in.
