Last night, at approximately 9:30, there were 6 police cars (5 Blue & Whites and one plain) lined up in front of Cocowalk. They were all there to deal with a sidewalk artist - one of those guys that spray paints scifi scenes. They had this guy in cuff, 4 cops were gathered around him as one cop seemed to be writing some sort of violation summons/arrest papers???
The other 2 cops were gossiping with passersby on the sidewalk.
6 cops - friday night in the grove - the crime - spray painting art walk on the sidewalk.
It's good to see that with the new administration the management of police manpower has once again gone out the window.
Anon 10:10 AM I am very sad to hear this. With a rapist on the loose and several North Grove Burglaries in the past week (5) in 1 week alone in broad daylight. You would think the Police would have better things to do.
Gorge Martin was an advocate for the merchants and I'm saddened by his departure. I can only hope that Commander Colina will be his own man and not blindly take his marching orders from Czarnoff.
The Miami Police Deptment's salaries are in large part paid for with tax dollars generated by the hard working men and women who have set up shop here in the village.
Call Mayor Regalado and ask him why his nephew (formerly a lieutenant) has been promoted to Deputy Police Chief with a huge salary increase (305)250-5300.
The word about nuisance and/or unnecessary harassment by the police in any municipality gets around and creates a wasteland of avoidance by those we want to attract to the Grove. Sad.
Why are you people so classless? Calling Commissioner Sarnoff 'Czarnoff' is idiotic and common. GROW UP!
Czarnoff is as nice as I can muster at this point Anon 2:18pm.
Spend a little quality time with him and then come talk on this blog.
Either they are arresting artists in what is supposed to be an "artists village"...or atleast it was for a few decades before Commissioner Czar took over...or they are parked with lights on in front of every bar in the Grove, doing their best to scare away as much business as possible and driving it to the other sections in Marc-E-Marc's district. Friday nights are as dead as I have seen it in fifteen years and you would figure those 8 cops would be elswhere in The Czar's district catching the thousands of drunk drivers that the 5am drinking establishments produce, or atleast assisting the ambulences that are being sent out to rush the hundreds of kids being hit by those same drivers at 5:05 am to various hospitals all over his same district.....
Okay. I admit to having thought that "Czarnoff" was kind of clever. It made me chuckle.
It suddenly seems that Sarnoff supporters have been getting increasingly vocal here. Is this blog serving a purpose? Is it a threat?
Other than remaining unindicted, I wonder if anybody can give me a good example of what Mr. Sarnoff has done as commissioner to help our community. Please do not tell me 3am closings, the black kiosks, Sarnoff Circle, the dog park replete with artwork, commercializing the Glass House, or keeping Home Depot out of our community. Oops. Scratch the last one.
He may have not done much for the Grove, but the people up in the UES are very pleased and will help keep him in office. He single handly was able to keep the level on Biscayne at 30ft. and he was able to drive Eric Silverman out of town on a rail. He vitalized Biscayne Blvd. and was brougt about MiMo Historic District and removed all the dangerous Royal Palms and now they have beautiful oak trees. He stopped development on 79th. Street. Really, he as done as much for the Grove or more, so stop you belly aching and give the guy some credit. He is a good commissioner and watch he will be an excellant chairman working closely with the Mayor. He has nominated quality people to the city board. Get over it!
Regarding artist in Coconut Grove.
The CITY of Miami Code Enforcement Board, The Mayor's Office, the commissioners and many gallery owners tried to put a stop to me displaying my art in front of my home and placed a lien in excess of
$60,000.00, increasing $250.00, daily until the value of the lien will exceed the value of my homestead----collectively, "they" said I was selling my art when in fact I was not. I've filed a State and Federal complaint and in my opinion I shall win. If I should win artist in Coconut Grove and throughout Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi will be able to legally sell their art on any sidewalk or park or other public space----period. "When" this happens I hope to see many artist in the Grove place their art outside and as far as art venues go I believe if the artist do this en mass the Grove as a whole will become slightly livelier with increased activity.
Did the police take this guy to jail?
Czarnoff is rather clever and made me chuckle also. Might be a great monicker as an endearment.
I dont believe the first post. Any one can come here and write "six cops beat a man last night on Virginia for no reason," I gaurantee many would believe it. The police have done a great job from what I have seen. There is safety in numbers in any profession.
Highly doubt the police were arresting a artist when hundreds of drunks and drug addicts are roaming the streets. How about you post facts not just your hate for police.
Re: anon 9:47AM.
Yeah, and that's just on Virgina St. alone.
You people make me laugh!
How bout you post some facts.
9:47 - sadly, I haven't seen hundred of anything roaming the streets since halloween. I hope you're happy.
ps. Czarnoff is creative and hysterical. Common or classless, I think not. Brilliant and poignant, certainly.
Heard nothing but good things about Martin, and I wish good luck to his replacement Commander Colina, we can all agree that this area has some "special" demands.
