Update on the Coconut Grove Peacock Tour

painted-peacock
The Coconut Grove Peacock tour is coming this Spring and things are heating up. This is one of the fiberglass peacocks, in it's infancy of creation.

Many have signed up to sponsor the birds and more are needed. They are looking for companies, organizations, non-profits and individuals to come forward and adopt the beautiful birds.

Each sponsor receives –
- A large fiberglass peacock and their choice of artist to paint and decorate it.
- Peacock on display in Coconut Grove for six months
- Plaque on Peacock base displaying sponsor and artist.
- Name and information in the NBC6, Comcast and Miami Herald advertising campaign.
- Name and information in the official tour maps distributed throughout South Florida.

Over 800,000 visitors over a 6 month period are estimated to be coming to the Grove to view this wonderful Public Art Event which will promote Coconut Grove, our artists and sponsors.

In the end there will be an auction of the Peacock for those who would like to endow a charity of their choice. Charities and non-profits who would like sponsors to consider them are Shake-A-Leg, Casa Valentina, Everybody Wins as well as Camillus House.

For info on the project, please contact Heather Bettner at 305-775-0113 or e-mail Heather@princemediadevelopment.com.

Most of the artists are Coconut Grove-based, they are: Daniel Bandroft, Rosie Brown, Romero Britto, Pablo Cano, Elizabeth Chacon, Debra Cortese, Karen Deilke, Sheila Elias, Meme Ferre, Kathi Gibson, Fred and AnnaMaria Windisch-Hunt, Ed King, Erika King, Doreen LoCicero, Justin Long, Robert Lorie, Maritza Molina, Alexandra Munson, Eileen Seitz, Fernando Sucre, Jane Tinney, Silvia Modica, Lynda Wellens, Nancy Martini, Deb Starbuck, Paula Turk and Rachel Joy Warren.

Too bad Papa Sarnoff and a couple of influential residents keep erradicating our Real Traditional Coconut Grove Peacocks, which had been here for over 4 decades before they showed up. CI

Consider all of the attention that those cute little ducks receive at the Peabody Hotels as they waddle each day to and from the lobby fountain! They are the best and least expensive form of marketing that helps to generate great PR and tons of business. The upkeep on those charming ducks is far less then the $18K per month the BID has been spending on the U.S.1 & 27th Ave billboard. Peacocks are one of Coconut Grove’s most high profile iconic symbol. It is a bit ironic to promote the attraction of more folks to the Grove with artistic representations of these majestic birds, when we are relocating the real ones to the Redlands. Perhaps we should figure out a better way to keep some of them safe in Peacock, Myers and Kennedy Parks. That way they would not disturb the residence that are unhappy with them and more folks would be attracted to see them in the Grove! More folks coming here, means more commerce which is better for the Grove Village. The care, feeding, protection and marketing promotion of our real live Peacock’s would be a much less expensive way for the BID and/or Chamber of Commerce to attract more people and commerce to the Grove. Maybe the CGVC would like to assign a committee to discuss the issue for a few months. Then perhaps they can make a recommendation to City Hall before all of the Grove Peacocks are gone and we are only left with the artistic representations.

So someone has estimated that a flock of plastic peacocks are gonna attract 800,000 visitors over 6 months?
Lessee here...
That works out to over 133,000 visitors a month, 31,000 a week or 4,400 per day. Surely no one thinks this is going to happen.

How much does it run to sponsor a bird? Just curious.

Once again a missed opportunity by coconut grove, to promote an idea that has any unique relevance to the area. Peacocks ? The area is world famous for what - peacocks ? Not dolphins or palm trees or alligators or sailboats, etc.Forget about a few dozen non native escaped peacocks living in small areas of the grove! Do peacocks represent coconut grove to the world ? Why not giraffes or bunnies, they are much cuter and have the same relationship! Check out a site called " Fiberglassanimals.com" You will see there scores of city animal projects that tie in with the city. As the site states --ideas and themes that are generated from local and regional culture, history and geographic location. What a lost opportunity for the 800,000 (!!!) visitors and the grove. Will you people ever get it right ?
