New sidewalks being added to McDonald Street
Sidewalks are being installed this week on McDonald Street. The work crew started at the Grand Avenue end, by the post office, and is working it's way up to Oak Street and possibly further, you may remember that in April, neighbors requested this job be done.
Cue the guy who who wants to know, "What did this cost?"

Cost? god forbid we provide pedestrian infrastructure in this automobile dominated world.
Who cares what it cost? For the $20,000 I pay in taxes, it is nice to see something in return. Unfortunately, the city should have laid these sidewalks 50 years ago, like in other civilized places.
CLL
Grape who cares what it costs we need more on main arteries in the Grove. Yeah Sarnoff for this and other improvements coming.
27th Av, 'Tiger Trail', Aviation and many others come to mind, but it's a start. Real Bike lanes? Don't get me started.. They are supposed to build another sidewalk on Bayshore Dr, West side from Aviation, northbound, starting in March 2010 from what I hear. I would be nice if they repaired the Lunar Landsacpe Pavement and repainted these Main Arteries, S. Bayshore, Main, Douglass, etc. for the thousands of Cyclists, runners and walkers who take our chances over here every day. Just dreaming, hoping some our "representatives" read some of this every blue moon.. CI
I agree CLL, who cares? It's great to see these improvements.
I wasn't complaining about the cost. Every time I talk about a project, someone here asks the cost. That is what I was referring to.
Larry Spring, chief financial officer, $233,525 annual salary, $43,000 special compensation. Total: $276,525
Now that is a lot of sidewalks!
BTW, wonder how the 3 million bucks project is going for Bird Rd? (If memory serves, the City has the excesss money THERE, but the County doesn't for the most transitted Roads that REALLY matter, go figure). (Reminds me of the 5am/3am closings, everything good seems to be North of Bird, for our District 2 so-called "representatives"). For those who couldn't attend that meeting at the Bookstore a few weeks ago, there's another slow, bumpy bike trail for the adventurous in the works! better than nothing, though. CI
Gary Hecht for Commissioner for D2!
Exit Metro Rail @ Douglas and you get sidewalks all the way into and through the Grand Ave West business district and directly into the Center Grove Business District. Exit Metro Rail @ 27th Avenue and you get sidewalks North to Palmetto, but exit South to down town Coconut Grove you get partial sidewalks to Berries and slightly past Burger King. No sidewalk until you pass Tigertail Drive. When the sidewalks do arrive on 27th, people from all over Southern Florida will have access to beautiful Biscayne Bay, rental boating events, Some of the most beautiful parks anywhere, restaurants, tree lines streets, banking, lawyers, shops, mortgage companies, an advanced art community, numerous, numerous and numerous professional establishments, movie sets and much, much more. Good start, but keep the cement coming.
I agree with Grape people are too fast to throw out numbers for everything.
Awesome! They should extend it all the way to Bird. Include Oak, Day, Shipping, and Jackson.
It is a great addition to the Grove. Too many streets in the Grove do not have sidewalks in an area that is dominated by people walking and running compared to any other area in the City of Miami. It is nice to finally see some improvements that are not directly in front of or surrounding Sarnoff's house!!!
Tom - I have to call you out on this one: No one has ever complained about the cost of sidewalks on your blog.
Complaints about stupid ways to spend money include: unnecessary circles in front of marc's house and proposed at every intersection in the grove; $90,000 a piece of black booths that serve no purpose; $90,000 a week to close down commodore plaza; hundreds of thousands per month paid by merchants for parking that doesn't exist, which is then paid for again by their patrons; the kennedy dog park, which cost a pretty penny and destroyed one of the best parks in the grove; pete hernandez salary, when marc sarnoff should just pay him as a secretary, since he appears to do marc's bidding as of late; any city official's salary which is over 100k; any car allowance for any city official, who also makes 200k per year, particularly when that allowance is for an $80,000 car. etc, etc, etc.
If we cut some fat, we could have beautifully paved roads with sidewalks and bike lanes as far as the eye can see.
"the kennedy dog park, which cost a pretty penny and destroyed one of the best parks in the grove;"
That guy,, Can you elaborate on that? What's your take on Kennedy Park? I've got tons of info and ideas on the subject of parks, or "bike lanes", for that matter. CI

Better than nothing, sure. However, how many people walk, run or bike through McDonald St? Commpared to 27th Av, Aviation, Main Hwk, Douglass, etc, etc and especially South Bayshore Drive. Those sidewalks, where available, are a mess. Not to mention the absolute absence of Real Bike Lanes for Speed Bikes, and the intricate Lunar Landscape of some sections of those roads. Veritable mines fields that will bust your bike or your ankles if you don't pay attention. Good to know it's nice, calm and smooth in front of our comissioner's house. CI
CI:
All those improvements in Commissioner Sarnoff's area were done many years before he became Commissioner. Cut the man a break. He is the ONLY good politician we have in Miami-Dade and perhaps the State of Florida.
Anon@ 11:40am.
Please specify or articulate whatever it is you are talking about. Typical vague, anonymous, partisan comments.. And no, I won't cut any mediocre politician a break, especially if they mess with our quality of life, and even our Freedom in the Grove. CI
CI:
Sir your freedoms in the Grove have been improved since Commissioner Sarnoff became Commissioner. He introduced the "Bill of Rights" for citizens regardless of sex, race, etc. No one else has ever done that! He exposed the illegal spending the City of Miami was doing. He works well with the Mayor. You can not name another person who has or could do as well! He has stopped development in the most of his district. He is doing great and will be very hard to replace his with someone better!
Anon@1pm:
Do you have a link to this "Bill of rights"? What does it actually accomplish? "Exposed illegal spending".. blah, blah, exactly how, when, where and for how much? Who's in jail for that? As if there's were more "illegal spending" now? (Whatever that means, case per case). "He works well with the Mayor" Which one? Cement Manny, for the past 3 years, or Regalado now who's against the 3am closings Sarnoff implanted? Among other discrepancies in various issues. "Has stopped development in most his his district" Can't argue there, it's almost dead now.. but seriously, can you cite Specific Examples? and EXACTLY what does any of that have to do with our freedoms? I was referring to the 3am closings, THAT's interfering with out freedoms, not to mention the impact on business.
"He's doing great....." Blah, blah blah, the usual political platitutes, vague campaign slogans, pure demagogy without any substance whatsoever. Are you on his payroll by any chance or just openly biased friends&family, Mr. anonymous? CI
CI:
Do you even have a clue what you are talking about? No I do not work for Sarnoff, but would love to be able to work for him for free. He has been a GODSEND to our community and anyway we can help him, we should! CI you are going to have to get over the fact that you can not accept that he is a good man and has done nothing but good for the Grove!
Is this clown for real? Zero details. CI
CI
Just ignore it. "What we've got here, is a failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach." - sorry, I love that move and it just fit too well.
All 5 of Mr. Sarnoff's supporters will give you that same thing, there's really no point in it.
It's ok tho, we will be rid of him soon enough. Let's get the recall under way. All we need is enough signatures to get it on the ballot, just like you would for a candidate.
That Guy! Real classy!
No way will you be able get even 5%
of the voters to recall. Besides being an excellant legislator, the man has class...no stupid jokes like, "Some men you can not even reach..." Not classy guy!
And who would you replace Commissioner Sarnoff with? No one out there with his abilities and 'street smarts'.
I'm proud to say that I voted for Sarnoff twice and will again!
Anon 5:34... there are plenty of people here in the Grove who are far more competent, less rude and equally qualified.. etc.
Gary Hecht and Pat Sessions are the first to come to mind... I could go on.
Then please go on! 06:42
RE: ANON 1:00PM...
And all this time, from 3rd grade on, I always thought that James Madison was the architect of The Bill Of Rights. It appears that back in 1787, James Madison the great, great, great grandfather Of Marc Madison Sarnoff only began The Bill of Rights. It was Marc himself who completed this human rights masterpiece. Thanks for the history lesson.
I agree with you on one thing. He certainly has stopped developement in the downtown SD-2 district. No business in their right mind would think of setting up shop under the current state of affairs. Nobody ever accused Marc of being stupid, just dishonest, arrogant, self serving and an elitest.
Marc couldn't shine Pat or Gary's shoes when it comes to integrety, street smarts or knowlege of the important history of the Grove.
Either person could do a first rate job as commissioner.
Mark is a GODSEND???
I would love for our commissioner to purchase multiple homes evenly spaced out in the Grove.
That way the entire Grove would get a much needed facelift.
He would unquestionably pour thousands of taxpayer dollars to improve his surroundings and we'd all benefit.
Sounds like a plan to me.
Better sidewalks than traffic circles.
