Hey kids, what time is it?

sundial1

No, it's not Howdie Doody Time, but if you do want to know the time did you know that we had a sun dial right in the center of town? That's right. Look up. It's atop Mayfair!

The sundial is part of the structure on Grand Avenue, right near the promenade.

That's Angie, a tourist passing through, who took some pictures of it recently, apparently it's a photo op. Who knew?

Can we actually tell the correct or close to the correct time from this dial?

Yes, you can tell the time with it, but only twice a year. Take a look at the sundial's face and you'll see it's set for a specific sundown time (which i can't remember at the moment). My guess is it's the two days a year when the sun sets directly down Grand Avenue to the west.

This makes a lot more sense when explained while looking at the thing.

Me again. On Feb 23, 2010, the sun will set at 6:19 PM. If you look at the sundial's face, you'll see the roman numeral VI (plus change) about where the shadow will fall when the sun is on the horizon at the western end of grand ave.

INTERESTING!

A Sun Dial where the sun does not shine.

Exactly the place where many comments here belong.

WHERE THE SUN DONT SHINE!!

Why only twice a year? I thought as long as it points to the true north (which it appears it does), you have the right time zone (which i assume it already does), you make the "equation of time" modification which changes throughout the year and you take into account daylight savings. You can tell the time during they day any day of the year.
