Glenn is not amused

While this photo of Glenn Terry and Antoinette Baldwin made things look happy at the end of last year's King Mango Strut, things are not fine in Mangohead-land. There are still two Strut events this week -- a Strut meeting Tuesday and kick-off party Wednesday, the following letter was sent by Glenn Terry, to Pete Hernandez, City Manager:

Dear Mr. Hernandez,

I thank you again for heading the arbitration session on 11-12-09 in City Hall to resolve the problems we were having with this year's King Mango Strut parade. You did a great job in helping Antoinette Baldwin come up with an agreement whereby,

1) The two of us would expand the board of KMS, Inc, with each of us choosing one-half of the additional members (the deadlocked board now consists of Ms. Baldwin and myself),

2) As holder of the State and Federal parade King Mango trademarks, I would give and Ms. Baldwin would accept (in behalf of KMS, Inc.), a 33-year license to use the trademarks for the parade and for use in the corporate name. Three years would be exclusive and the remaining 30 years non-exclusive, and,

3) Based on the above, King Mango Strut -as opposed to Coconut Players Inc.- would be given the city permit to produce the 2009 parade.

In the days that followed Ms. Baldwin refused to comply with "1 and 2" above. Over my protests, the City gave KMS Inc. the permit anyway. Several day later, despite my protests, the Grove BID agreed to finance a KMS Inc. effort to produce the parade.

I am the President of KMS, Inc. and half of its board. I never agreed to apply for a permit to put on this year' s parade. I did agree last month that our corporation would accept the proposed permit and produce the 2009 parade when the 11-12-09 agreement was honored, carried out and and signed by Ms. Baldwin.

This has not happened. King Mango Strut Inc. is not producing the 2009 King Mango Strut parade. The corporation and I will not be responsible for its production and any resulting events that may occur.

I think I understand the City's position -it has been repeated to me a number of times by city officials-, "We just want a parade and do not really care about Glenn Terry's trademark rights or that we are granting a permit to an nonfunctional, deadlocked corporation to produce the 2009 KMS parade".

I get it. The city is big and tends to do what it wants. What you have done is to grant Ms. Baldwin a permit to produce the parade. The Grove BID has agreed to finance her effort. I ask you and the BID to make this clear to the public.

King Mango Strut, Inc. will not be producing or financing the 2009 King Mango Strut parade unless our 11-12-09 agreement is honored.

Again, I thank you, Commission Sarnoff, and the other members of the City's staff for all efforts to resolve these unfortunate problems.

Glenn Terry,
President and co-director of KMS, Inc.
Director, Coconut Players Inc.,
and Co-founder of the King Mango Strut parade

Do you realy think anyone cares who technically puts the parade on? Get over your ego, it's not YOUR parade, it belongs to the the people who partcipate in it and the people who come out to watch it. Trust me, if you move to Alsaka tommorrow, the parade and the people who watch it will never know the difference.

As someone who has participated in the Strut for years, I'd notice a difference immediately.

The egos are inflated on both sides, people are too power hungry and the strut has lost its spirit.

This parade is supposed to be carefree and fun - corporate free.

What's happening with the Strut is a microcosm of what has happened with the Grove. It's become everything it once mocked. A gentrified parade for a gentrified village.

Alright, I'm not a corporate lawyer, but it sounds like Mr. Terry trademarked the name "King Mango Strut" in his own personal name, while sitting on the board of directors for King Mango Strut, Inc., and then negotiated with his own company to use the trademark - there's got to be some kind of conflict of interest there. As a director, isn't he required to act in the company's best interest or something? How does he get to trademark KMS in his own name? Basically he can hold the company hostage with those trademarks?

Glenn,
For a while there it looked like you were not actually an obstructionist jerk, but fortunately you stepped in to nip that misconception in the bud.

Just put on a King Mango Stroll.

Bust out a Thesaurus. If he wants it made apparent, then make posters that say King Mango Strut. Have the "Strut" crossed out and write some replacement word. That makes it obvious to anyone taking a look at it that something's gone down with the name, but it's still pretty much the same old parade.

For a place that seems to take some measure of pride in being relaxed, the organizers of events in the Grove seem to be pretty pompous about the whole thing.

I am confused the paragraph that starts with "I am the President of .................I never agreed to apply for a permit ..etc etc.
You can't do anything in this city without a permit. Were you abandoning all your loyal friends in the end?

It seems like the two sat down with a mediator and came up with a compromise, but then one Ms. Baldwin later decided against what was agreed upon. That doesn't seem fair either.

I respect and like both Glenn and Antoinette very much. They are both wonderful Grovites that love Coconut Grove. But I am quite unhappy with the battle over the KMS. I find it particularly offensive to read all the negative comments made with regards to Glenn. We owe so much to him for all the many years of contributions he has made to the Strut, published stories in The Herald about the Grove and efforts made to improve Peacock Park. Glenn has always been the Groves best “Good Will Ambassador”. Both Glenn and Antoinette have contributed greatly for many years, they both have visions of what the Strut should be. It is a travesty that they can’t come up with a better resolution than this one that will not include both of them in this years KMS. Yes the Strut is bigger then anyone person and it will hopefully continue to survive, mock authority and entertain all of us for many years to come. But it is sad that this years Strut will not include Glenn. The good news is that we have all of next year to find a better solution to the KMS so that we can all Strut together again.

He wrote this letter, he deserves the reaction that this letter brings about.

Don't know Glenn from Adam, but he seems to be very interested in creating a lot of drama about this, and not very interested in putting on a parade...

The Mango Strut without Glenn? That is just so unbelievable. How can anyone dare to participate unless he is a part of the parade. It's like destroying an historical building. Sure, the new one is pretty, but it will never again be the same. It's a very sad day for all of us.

Another lost piece of our Coconut Grove History.

I'm confused! Mr. Glenn Terry started this parade way back when, right? If this is correct, what did Mr. Terry do? Did he one day form a corporation or legal entity and somehow lose his creation? In my opinion if Mr. Terry formed the parade then it is his parade and has every legal and moral right to voice any opinion at all regarding anything at all about his creation. My question is, how did he lose his creation?

How about making this stupid conflict part of the parade. Glenn and Antoinettte in a mud wrestling pit on the back of the Shell lumber truck. Let the crowd determine the winner. Could be a classic "Strut" way to handle this very public, very stupid disagreement. Remember "Put the Nut back in Coconut Grove?" Time to get back to the zany basics of what has made this parade so much fun.

Say what you want but who has held the Grove's great parade together for 27 years? What enabled him to make it happen? Making all these ugly comment people happy?
Maybe some of you should strut in his shoes.

Somebody tell Glenn what he is calling a mediation was a meeting. He should know the difference. A mediation would be before a certified mediator and they would have paid money to have the matter heard.

Too the last few commentors, it was my understanding that Mr. Terry has not been involved in the Strut, aside from the last year, for quite a number of years.

Is that not the case?

To everyone taking sides in this...Now is the time to stop all this...Glenn was and is still expected to be part of the Strut...It is his decision what he wants to do. There is a rift in the KMS, Inc. organization that consists of two people...Glenn and Antoinette. Unfortunately this is causing a schism in the community...Both Glenn and Antoinette have in previous years gotten the parade permit under KMS, Inc. in each of their respective names...Last year Glenn was issued the permit and we all jumped in to put on the Parade...This year Antoinette was issued the permit and we should again jump in to put on the parade...Unfortunately I have been deep in this matter...and at this point the best thing I can say is...IGNORE IT AND STRUT!

Struttin's what's important so regardless of who is running the show each year it's the people involved that make it what it is...

Please come out and DO YOUR THING...Thanks

All you Grovites were a lot more fun when you were young and flipping the peace sign. Age has not done good by you. You seem now to be a bunch of grownups who are more selfish than the ones you protested against, and who want to end the character of the Grove that you so enjoyed in your youth by taking it away from everyone else - like KMS and all-night bars. What a bunch of whining, spoiled, selfcentered egomaniacs!

Commissioner Sarnoff has to be somewhere hidden in all this KMS contoversy...there is way to much "my this", and "my that" and "it must be done this way or else" to not get the hint of stench from the Sarnoff regime. Glenn, is your last name really Sarnoff by chance? Relax guy, you probably are a really good man, but when you say things like "more or less a democracy", it just sounds bad and Sarnoff-ish. You created something you love doing for your own sense of self worth and it has brought joy to thousands of people...that is something. Don't tarnish that with the its mine stuff....your better than that

I don't get it. After about 25 years Glenn finally decides to trademark the Mango name and license it, possibly for profit? Maybe he started it (and not by himself), but he was not the only one to work on it all these years. Many others helped out without getting paid.

Antoinette wants to keep Mango free for everyone. Glenn says he owns it. Why should they BOTH grow up? It seems one already has.
