Latest sketch of rape suspect released

This is the computer generated sketch of the suspect in the Coconut Grove Rape incident last week. There is not much to go on, the assailant is described as a black male, 5' 7", 175 pounds, medium build, wearing blue jeans, black windbreaker, dark shirt, black skull cap and a red bandanna over his mouth.

Neighbors in Village West are concerned that any black man fitting this description will be a suspect. Miami Police Chief Miguel Exposito, explained at a town meeting yesterday that the police will be observing more than just body and facial features.

Currently, there is a $1000 reward (neighbors hope to raise more money to put toward the reward). Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact the Miami Police Department's Special Victims Unit at (305) 603-6300 or Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade at (305) 471-8477 (TIPS).

I've live on Gifford Lane since 1965. On three occasions I've stood vigil in the early AM in my front yard and watched and observed criminal intent and made my presence known. It took days and several weeks to let them know they were being observed. It worked three times and had lasting effect. Gentlemen, do you job. When you see em, have you cell phone in your hand and call the police. An officer will appear in less than two minutes, probably much less.

I hope others were as outraged by this joke of a meeting as I was. From our late arriving city commmissioner who took this opportunity to pander to the merchants who are gunning for him, rather than giving solid helpful information and precautions to the the public, to a police chief who showed up 30 minutes late and admitted he didn't even know anything about the case. Guess he's been too busy politicing for a new job instead of fighting crime. Or the mayor who couldn't be bothered to show up at all.

ontOr how about the city manager finally figuring out after 3 weeks and 2 rapes that maybe a $1,000 reward put up by crime watch, not the city, might just not be enough to get any results. The flyer passed out was ridiculous, printed in black and white without contrast so you couldn't even make out the suspects details in their renderings. (Note to police, 200 flyers in color cost $120 at Kinko's)Not to mention that they forgot a few key items such as the entire desciptrition of the subject(s). Every detail about the perpertrators had to be dragged out of the police by the members of the audience. But considering our commissioner wasn't sure if the perpetrators were male or female, (hermaphrodites?)what else could we expect?. After the police stating in the last crime watch meeting that "The Grove doesn't have rapes", they now want us to be so really pleased that they have reduced crime by a whopping 4% in the grove. At least they had the decency to admit that the victims and the rest of us probably wern't impressed by their self serving stats. There were practically no meaningful safety tips and the real credit for this meeting should go to the Grovites in the audience who came up with great ideas and saftey tips.
We all want the merchants in the grove to do well and in the proper proportion the encouragement to keep shopping (it would help the merchants if they they contribute to solving this problem by putting the flyers in their windows, not behind the counter, as Dave Collins said)in the Grove is a good idea but that's not what the majority of the people were there for. They wanted solid information, and real saftey information, not platitudes and shopping
encouragment. I'm sure the cops on the street are working their butts off and it's them , not the self serving politicians who will solve this crime.
I'm just glad the victims or their familes wern't there to see the insentive and pretty much useless meeting.inued:

Guy the police chief was sworn about an hour before. Would you rather him not show up? You guys get mad no matter what.

Sorry, but you're wrong,he was sworn in at 4:30.
and so what , did he stop working while he was waiting days for the ceremony? Perhaps if he had been on time, he could have spent 10 minutes with his men and gotten sn updateso he offer something better than platitudes. Why bother showing up if you don't take the time to prepare yourself for the meeting? Anybody in the private sector would be fired if they showed up unprepared like he did. He needs to get his priorities straight.

Gentlemen, pick up your cell phones, stand about in the affected area(s) of concern, stay alert, don't move around and make noise, be vigil and if you should see anyone doing something supicious call the police. Bad mouthing the police, the police chief or the Mayor won't help protect the ladies.

With some empty storefronts around, you'd think someone would come up with the idea of donating the space for a few self-defense classes for women.

Commissioner Regalado was at the front of the line to criticize Chief Timoney during the hunt for the Shenandoah rapist.

Mayor Regalado is now nowhere to be found during the Coconut Grove rapist and instead sends in his unprepared hand picked police chief.

This was a meeting sponsored on behalf of the Miami PD and the new Police Chief. He was an embarrassment to the Department. Although to give him credit, I did hear in an earlier media briefing that his primary concern was the morale of the troops. Obviously crime and the safety of the citizens he's been hired to protect is on the back burner.

This meeting was an absolute disgrace and the City of Miami should be ashamed of themselves. Honestly if the business district is concerned about their already dwindling numbers, they should put up the signs of the suspect and make people aware of whom to look for to help police arrest this animal. Then people will happily return to the area. Also it's great overall crime is down 12% this year, but I imagine Felonies are currently through the roof in Coconut Grove now!!! So how about we do something about those numbers??? And as for Grove West being concerned that every 5'-7" black male will be targeted...Well Honestly they should be until this piece of crap is caught, cause it is more than clear that he is from that part of town with two incidences happening less than a half a block apart....

Grape, you absolutely have to start putting our new Mayor's and our new Police Commissioner's feet to the fire.

They cannot/should not come to a meeting unprepared and uneducated.

And as far as the new chief worring about morale, all he should have to do is remind the cops about their salaries and their pensions.

While you most of you are celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years with your families there will be police officer out on the street looking for this armed offender, taking time from their families. The cops dont have an easy job and this is not an episode of CSI.
Stop placing politics on top of the already victimized women.

Ask yourself what are you doing to protect your neighborhood besides pointing fingers on a computer or do you expect the police to sit in your drive way and protect your family only?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to raise this tremendously low reward? Perhaps to a level that might actually encourage people to really start looking and becoming more aware of this situation and possibly lead to an arrest/conviction???

The Grove- never satisfied.. you all sound like you are members of a homeowner's owner's association

Police are doing their best and of course the citizens have to keep watch to assist the police in catching this animal. Alot of people hear and see things that are suspicious and don't say call the police. This is the wrong approach.. Call the police even if it's nothing- it might turn out to be something..

Keep the Grove Safe!!

As to raising the amount of the ridiculously low award, an insult to the young lady and her loved ones, how about Sarnoff sending out a plea -- where's his outrage?

I think that in all fairness to the officers, comissioner, police chief and and county manager thanks you for the effort. However I feel like the focus of the meeting was to keep everyone going to the restaurants and shops. We are aware that security has been beefed up in the buisness district but unfortuanately the crimes are being committed in the neighborhoods. It is great that we have bicycle patrol around the buisness district but maybe they need to venture off and ride down Virginia, Mary, Shipping and all the other neighboring streets.
On a positive note it is great to see the grove come together in these times. The Grovites will prevail.

Sarnoff was not sure if the perpetrator was a male or female, so I doubt he's all that outraged, but any other actual helpful suggestions???

Well this certainly has deflected the focus off of the 3am/5am issue.

Watch the Miami Commission Meeting where Chairman Sarnoff actually tries to make political hay out of this horrible horrible event. He is saying that if he didn't get his way that 3 1/2 half police officers would be removed from the Grove. This is probably the lowest he has reached! Do watch. The man is 'poop'!

The Center Grove robber and rapist assaulted two defenseless Grovites. This unspeakable violent and criminal act is shameful, life changing and has also hurt our entire residential and business community. I am confident in our police and know that with the help of citizens and a decent reward, they will find this perpetrator soon. But let’s not deflect the focus of this crime and this investigation for a need to help Grove Village shops and restaurants stay busy and profitable. The assault being made on our Grove business operators is much easier to discover who are the actual perpetrators. They are the greedy landlords, Parking Authority and those that have eliminated our economic engines (Playhouse, Expo Center & Movie Theaters).

I walked around the Grove last night and noticed why these incidents may have occurred. Every rental property I saw had poor lighting and zero cameras.
Landlords making hundred of thousands of dollars and will not invest in the security of their tenants.

If our politicians would just do their jobs: build sidewalks, light the streets, increase police presence, enforce laws, etc, etc, we would all be better served.

Yes we do need sidewalks, street lighting, more police, etc. in the Grove, but thanks to the likes of Larry Spring, Miami's C.F.O. there is no money! The money is gone! Mr. Spring must take some of the responsiblity for what is happening in the Grove. Maybe he will do better as the City Manager of North Miami. They still have a reserve.

You all seem to go on about things that do not address the need to capture the person or persons. These are crimes of opportunity. Having lived here on that very street for better than 20 years. My observation are that the street that leads west is wide open and easy for escape into the hood. I am politically correct and aware. In this case why mince with words. Check the police blotters for the last 20 years and make a diagram as to where exactly the crimes have happened for way to long. You will find certain corridors are very convenient for escape. Invasion of ones homes and bodies are not new in the Center Grove. I myself have had invasion and robbery more than four times once while at home.

WOW! Try blaming the rapist and not everyone else!!! Be aware of your surroundings, don't walk alone at night...you know the drill! Spend more time putting up posters and looking for the guy and less time bitching!
