Bring the people to the street; literally
Picture Lincoln Road on Miami Beach. Now picture last week's Mad Hatter Arts Festival in the Grove.
How about making Grand Avenue a weekend or Sunday-only closed street promenade? The Green Market could be out there as well as musicians, artists, the antique market and maybe a few other things like small food vendors (water, juice, maybe hot dogs, run by local restaurants).
There seems to be no adverse effect on traffic patterns, in fact, people can take the scenic route along the water when coming or going from the Grove when Grand Avenue is closed. It was a smashing success last week, maybe it can be a regular thing.

Excellent suggestion!
That stretch could be closed permanently and it would be a resounding success.
The BID is suppose to implement new ideas to bring back traffic in Coconut Grove, as the BID did on Lincoln Road a few years ago and Coral Gables today.
The Coconut Grove BID needs to be more agressive in their efforts if they want to succeed.
If the BID board let David Collins work , we may hace a chance to have more events and a better crowd but he is spending most of his time taking orders from Sarnoff and Ron.
The Blade.
I echo Mr. Scornavacca about the street closing permanently but from where on the west? Just past the parking garage by Cocowalk on Grand? And what about the traffic flow into neighborhoods who don't want it?
There is no BID on Lincoln Road.
I think the idea is only to close it from Mary to Virginia, which I think is a good Idea for weekend, and it might actually make someone interested in renting some of that space. Much of which just continues to sit vacant.
Good idea Tom, I like that you're being creative and putting ideas out there. If we throw enough of them around, maybe one will stick.
There was a BID on Lincoln Road, It redesignED the entire street, taxed property owners with a special asessement, brought new tenants, marketed the area and was dissolve once the project was completed.
I understand the fun & enthusiasm street festivals & events bring to the area, but DIVERSIFYING is an even better idea. People CAN get festival burnout & I'm sure there are other formats that can attract those who aren't into art. Lets cast our nets a little further out...
The redevelopment of Lincoln Road in the 1990s was a project of the City of Miami Beach and financed with bonds, not self-assessment by a non-existent BID. The problem was simply that the project was too big, close to $20 million, to ever be financed by taxes on the then very weak retail community along the street.
