What's up with the speed bumps?

I didn't think much of it, but the new speed bumps going in around Day and Virginia are not appreciated by a lot of the neighbors. I think they are better than another traffic circle and apparently a four way stop sign does not work there.

But quite a few neighbors were away for summer vacation and came home to this.

Another case of things being done without the public being told. I know notices are supposed to go out and such, but many people didn't receive notices and neither did I. I am either getting old and missing too much news around here or people in charge just like to keep things hush hush because they don't like to deal with the repercussions before the fact and prefer to deal with it all after the fact.

I do remember the Bridgeport issue. Nothing was done there, but why is this being done on Day and Virginia?

We need changes around here. Many changes. Like a Village Council that actually puts out minutes and news to the public, so we have an idea of what is going on. I must be falling asleep when watching the meetings, because I don't remember this or the peacocks.

And it would be nice too, if our district commissioner did the same. I want to be in the loop so the Grapevine readers are in the loop. We don't like surprises and are getting tired of them.

I am requesting the minutes of Village Council and City Commission meetings, please. After every meeting, please. Thank you.

Are they already going up? We got a letter in the mail with a ballot from the county. The ballot isn't due until September 18. Residents within a certain distance are sent these ballots and it will only happen if a certain percentage approves it. If people don't approve it, then the bumps shouldn't be built.

I lived between Virginia and Matilda for many years. We have really fast traffic on Day during afternoon rush hour, people coming from downtown and cutting through the Grove. There is a need for something to slow traffic there. What surprised me was the cost shown in the letter. $32,000, for speed bumps?

Peacocks... inexpensive traffic calming devices.

I live on Virginia and they spray painted a speed bump location right in front of our building. We didn't receive any notice.

Theyre already going up?!?!?! WTF? Michelle is correct, you only got notification if you live in the area. I live in the neighborhood and was sent a application to vote. I received it just last week and mailed it in the next day. I voted against it. The speed bumps are unnecessary. Yes, there are occasional speeders on Day Ave, however, they really cant speed that much as there are stop signs on virtually every corner. Its bad enough with the traffic circle. We dont need the neighborhood to look like an obstacle course.

Yes, Brian, you should run! I just opened three weeks of mail this morning and the letter was in there. It's in an envelope from the County.

I live on Day between Virginia and Matilda, I did get the notice and I am all for the speed bumps. There is heavy pedestrian traffic and only sporadic sidewalk sections, forcing people to walk in the street. Car traffic always blows the stop sign at Matilda and gets to top speed before jumping on the brakes at Virginia.
Don't get me wrong, I would prefer the traffic circles (or sidewalks), but I was told they are not an option so this is the next best choice.

I'm all for trying the speed bumps! I've nearly been hit by cars either blowing through the stop sign or barely slowing down. Forget pedestrians! Virginia has become the preferred way to get from US 1 into the Grove. Cars really don't care if there are stop signs or not. The traffic circle at Shipping and Virginia may slow traffic a tiny bit but it is a huge hazard for pedestrians. Center Grove should be for local traffic, not people trying to find the quickest way home weaving through residential streets.

Ive spoken to a few people who have those speed humps in their neighborhoods and they told me they do little to curtail speeding. They also can cause damage to cars which I was told becomes the responsibility of the neighborhood (but in this case it was a private neighborhood so that probably doesnt apply here).

Also, my office building is undergoing some substantial renovations right now. The cost? $36,000. Its about 100-200 times the amount of effort it would take to put in 8 speed humps...

Speed bumps are the most self defeating invention man has ever created.

Also, Calvin, please feel free to post insanely hyperbolic messages... oh wait, I'm too late.

Get in touch with your commissioner and tell him it's not appreciated. The residents should have a say in this.

Hello everyone wake up this is what the Commissioner asked for and so this is what's going in. Done deal. Regardless of that many other Grove areas in the past have been told by the same Commissioners office that we (the Grove) are not allowed to do speed bumps per the County. The answer is always no except if it's his neghborhood? What's up with that?

And why don't the trucks delivering to Mayfair and Cocowalk observe the No Thru Trucks sign on Virginia, Bridgeport and 30th Ct? We need them ticketed a few times and they might catch on.

Sorry Contrarian, if my post didn’t meet your lofty literary standards. I’m sure everyone is impressed with your keen insight of the writing process…and the use of a good thesaurus.

Or, just continue to be that sad guy who needs to post just so you can get that self-esteem boost you so obviously require. You know what, I apologize, I am sure you are a well adjusted, fascinating guy with lots of friend…oops there I go with those hyperbolic messages again …

Look. Anybody who wants a speed bump or a circle on their street just needs to elect the person that is owns a property adjacent to the particular corner to the commission. Within a few weeks there will be circles (some named for that person) and speed bumps galore.

I wish we had speedbumps on my street in South Grove. People hall ass down my street just trying to take a short cut from Main Hwy to 37th Ave. We've even had some casualties....a dog and a couple of peacocks. Speedbumps would be greatly appreciated!

Re Bridgeport: last week a sign went up at the corner of Bridgeport and US1 notifying that they are closing up the median on US1. So southbound US1 traffic will not be able to make a left onto Bridgeport (and Bridgeport traffic will not be able to go left onto US1).

Would love for someone to explain what problem they believe they are resolving with this (and accordingly justify spending $$ here).

The traffic problem on Bridgeport is from people using Bridgeport as a shortcut/speedway to get to the NORTHBOUND lanes of US1 (making a right off of our street). Closing off the median does not affect this traffic pattern in any way, and effectively creates a significant inconvenience to those of us who live on Bridgeport and regularly make a left from the southbound lanes of US1 to get to our homes.

Since when is doing “anything” (regardless of relevance to the actual problem) just to say you did “something”, an appropriate use of public funds?

YES to Traffic Calming measures including Speed Bumps.

Too many people drive too fast, and don't get me started on those who are on the phone and texting. They drive badly then they don't move when the light turns Green!!!

Grape,

Commission minutes are available on the Legistar section of the City website within a few days of a meeting. Better still, City TV can stream commission meetings on demand, where you can jump to specific items on the agenda. It's very easy.

I disagree with you Blind Mind. I've lived in the area 20+ years and I think speeding and people driving through intersections without bothering to stop for signs or pedestrians IS a problem. Don't know if the speed bumps will work but I know stop signs don't. All residents of the immediate area will get to vote though so we'll see what the county decides to do.

I just walked my dog in the area mentioned last night and we were nearly hit by a car. We were on Day, approaching an intersection, no sidewalks there, and the car burned through the stop sign and turned left onto Day, almost right into us.

This happens nearly every time I walk on Day, which is just around the corner from my townhouse on 32nd.

I am not a big fan of speed bumps, but I am even less of a fan of people who almost run over me, whilst talking on the phone, speeding and running stop signs.

This is not at all hyperbole. Try walking the neighborhood after work or after happy hour and you will experience the same.
