Incredible turnout for Great Grove Bed Race

race6
I'd like to call it the Great Grove Bed Race, but yesterday's race can be called the Incredible Grove Bed Race. Everything came together (including the weather), which made for a perfect, incredibly fun day.

Above, Commissioner Marc Sarnoff and Race Car driver, Helio Castroneves, flank Sylvano Bignon. Sarnoff and Castroneves were celebrity judges, and Sylvano's Greenstreet Cafe, had a bed in the competition.

race1
The winners of the Great Grove Bed Race was the Sandbar Grill team, they came in first place for speed.

race2
Second place went to the UM Sleep Center bed, left, and third went to The Newbiezzz, which was the team from Palmetto Bay, which parodied their recent cat catastrophe.

race3
In the category of look, theme and "wow factor," the four winners were Tucci Umbrellas, above, which came in first.

race4
Second place went to Antoinette Baldwin, who played the Octomom, with her team called Team Woomba (eight is never enough, was their slogan) and third place went to the SoFlo Skate Shop, the new biz on Grand Avenue, who had a pirate-themed bed.

race5
Fourth place for best theme, went to Transit Lounge, had an actual tiki hut bar on wheels.

There was much more to see and do, we'll post more photos tomorrow.

Great job Grape.
You and the other volunteer organizers put a lot of time and effort into making this happen. Fantastic work all around with a special note of appreciation to the participants who showed such spirit and creativity.

Thanks to all the volunteers and organizers. Our team had a lot of fun building and racing the mighty Valhasher. I hope to be back with a faster bed next year...

I live on Gifford Lane, a lead road into downtown Grove, a road one street East of 32'd Avenue/McDonald, but with no sidewalks, i.e., not safe to stroll down en route to the Grove.
I'd guess about 100 to 150 couples and another 100 or so individuals walked past my home where I have placed a lot of art for people to enjoy, so many people stopped and talked with me about the Grove. Everyone, without exception was laughing, smiling and having a good day. A lot of people made individual and group efforts for this special event and from what I saw and heard the Grove made a lot of people happy and gave families and the individuals a place to call home as they collectively descended on the Grove.

The Grove did come together yesterday, and even better, South Florida came together in the Grove. Congratulations to event coordinator Daisy Lewis for a great job, and a big thanks you to all who believed in, and supported this wonderful event, whether it was financially, as volunteers, or simply by showing up.

This event accomplished what it set out to do, which is to continue to emphasize Coconut Grove as South Florida's center for unusual, irreverent and original fun. As someone was quoted in today's Herald, you can't find that in South Beach.

Fun events such as this, that fill our restaurants and shops and promote us as a destination to tourists and locals alike, is what we need to be marketing. COCONUT GROVE IS MIAMI'S FUN STREAK!

Whether planning a trip to South Florida, an upcoming weekend or a night on the town, the question our marketing should strive to put in everyone's mind is, "I wonder what is going on in Coconut Grove?"

Let's keep up the momentum! On to Madhatter!

thought there was really going to be a parade, instead of beds being displayed down Commadore, that would have been nice and less hectic. also I could not see everythin....

great event! too bad not everybody followed the rules i.e: Woomba team had like 8 team members! and the UM sleeping Center team was pulling their bed as you can see in the picture. Beside those details the Event was GREAT!!! thanks for organizing this and letting us being part of it!

I loved that Helio did not know who Marc Sarnoff is. That part of Helio's introduction was the funniest thing in years! Grape you have to report on this everyone has been talking about how that went down.

Besides that Grape and everyone involved did a great job! Welcome back bed races. Next year make sure the Host knows who the Commissioner is :)

It was a great event and the Merchants Group really pulled this off. The beds were very creative and everyone seemed to have a good time. I know it was a joint effort with a lot of organizations helping out like the Chamber, the BID, the Commissioner's office, and it just goes to show what can be done when everyone works together.

Helio was joking about not knowing who Sarnoff was. They were together at the press conference at Cabana One, with the Mayor, that's why he said, "you're the mayor's friend," and laughed.

I have photos of them together in the Grapevine at the press conference last month.

The bed races were awesome! Only improvements could be to put speakers down by the finish line-we couldn't hear anything that was going on. Also, the finish line should have been a little farther down in front of Sandbar where the hay stacks were. Other than that-AWESOME JOB!

Go Team Sandbar!!!

Wow! It really looks like a great time! Sorry to have missed it!

I'm a bit disappointed that the Hash Runners weren't faster, must have been a little too much "On-On" early on! :P

Grape,

Awesome job. Everyone associated with the Race should be extremely proud of a job well done. We are already excited about next year's race. By the way, thanks for pointing out that Helio was just kidding around with Marc. He and the Commissioner hit it off at the press conference and clicked again once they saw each other at the race on Sunday. Helio is extremely down to Earth and told Marc afterward how impressed he was with the event and the Grove.
