In the works

The BID has allocated $150,000 for entry signs at most entry points into the Village including SW 27th Avenue and US1 and South Bayshore Drive entering from Brickell.

Also, small directory signs are part of the project.

BID's effort to install real gateways into Coconut Grove is a great idea. Too bad that the Chamber or CGVC did not champion this idea long before now! A massive billboard is not the answer. It is a bit ironic that most Grovites fight to keep unsightly commercial billboard out of our Village of Coconut Grove but our BID is willing to spend $17K/mos. ($204K/yr) to help attract more commerce.

Gate Way: A huge billboard sign should not be the principle way to generate more commerce or to indicate the principle entrance to Coconut Grove the most historic area in South Florida. Let’s look to Coral Gables for inspiration on how they indicate their gateways. Let’s create real iconic entrances with Coral Pillars, coral arches, Coconut Palm's or an Artist representation of the spirit of historic Coconut Grove. We deserve better then a blue sign on a pole or a big billboard sign.

Pillars, arches???? - we're not Coral Gables. We want peacocks, coconuts, artists' easels and sailboats and seascapes on our logos not even those dark pictures on the poles around the Grove - they are dull and boring.

$204,000.00, per year for a bill board that no one reacts to. Please ride by heading North and convince anyone that people look up while driving by and are somehow motivated to visit the Grove, much less have time to make sense of this stupid, stupid bill board. Now $150,000.00 to tell people coming into the Grove that they are entering the Grove. That's $354,000.00 and for what? Absolute nothingness.

Harry, This post does not say they want to install real gateways into Coconut Grove? It says they wnat more signs and they will be spending an additional $150,000 on these signs. As well more smaller signs. I thought we need less signs not more? How can anyone read signs while driving anyway? They are all way too busy texting?

This is not a good idea more wasted money.

These are gateways and signs. The signs are directories, small directories in center village. The gateways are entrace markers that say something like "Welcome to Coconut Grove."

With all resopect I think it is good idea, though it must be done tastefull and in line with our community, as Harry states: a reflection of. The money is worth the effort. Has anybody noticed that we basically sent our visitors out by no directions or signs when entering or leaving the Grove, this is partial to blame on the traffic flow, which I think need attention first before anything else. People entering the Grove from Grand Ave are send on their way to downtown and brickell before they know it. That needs to stop, and signs will help. All muninicipalities in NW Europe have signs when entering and leaving their turf with a small friendly message, I am in favor.
