FPL to discuss high voltage lines tonight
An open house is being held at UM tonight, September 2, concerning the high powered lines that FPL is planning on putting up and down the US1 corridor.
As you know the Village Council and others in our community are quite concerned.
Reps from FPL and the Dept. of Environment Protection will be on hand to answer questions. The meeting is from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at the University of Miami Bank United Center, Hurricane 100 Room, 1245 Dauer Drive.

FPL has proposed this route, which puts 100' high voltage power lines up US-1 adjacent to the metrorail. The Village Council has issued a resolution against it, and has been working with Representative Lopez-Cantera's office and Commissioner Sarnoff's office, as well as a number of other municipalities (South Miami, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay) to try to find a way to stop it. There are other routes they could use. It is VERY important that LOTS OF PEOPLE show up at this meeting. Previous meetings were not well attended and FPL will point to that and say people don't oppose it. Please find a way to get there if you can.
I thought they were going to be putting the cables underground??? Either way, any construction of power lines even close to US1 will make traffic a million times worse... if that's even possible!
at Monday nights public meeting in homestead only a handful of prople showed up. if we want to be taken seriously by FPL we must have a respectable attendance at this meeting tonight.
Anon 11:13,
At no point has FPL ever suggested that these high-voltage transmission lines were going to be underground. Must have been a garbled transmission while you were away from the planet.
The Village Council's resolution asked for them to go underground, at FPL's expense, but there are state regs that would allow them to charge the taxpayers. They won't even give solid numbers about the cost, except that it's millions and millions and millions of dollars. The best thing would be for the lines to be put somewhere else. Please be there if you can.
Why is it that we can install TV cable, water and sewer lines underground, but we keep filling the sky’s with electrical cables that continuously fall down in high winds and knock our homes and commerce off the grid for many days? Drive through Miami Lakes and you can actually see the sky because the power lines are underground.
We've been working hard on this since April on the Grove's behalf. It would mean a lot if we had a good turnout to show FPL that we won't be strong-armed by them like they are used to doing. I'll be there, so I hope to see you all too.
A few facts might be in order here. The physics of placing power lines underground with 10's of thousands of volts is a totally different proposition than burying water, sewer or cable TV. Not that it can't be done, but it is a big (expensive) deal. Further, are you going to be comfortable knowing that thousands of volts are surging underground on a street with standing water after one of our summer downpours? While overhead wires are a pain when they get blown down, at least you know where the problem is. Anyone interested in waiting around after a hurricane while FPL excavates mile after mile trying to find shorted out buried lines? While everyone can agree that overhead lines are an eyesore, there are certain practical realities that no amount of aesthetic hand-wring can avoid.
