Capital improvement plan for Bird Avenue
Representatives from the City's Capital Improvement program presented the plans before the Village Council and asked for their feedback. There is actually no design right now but there were conceptual drawings. Once there is an agreement to proceed with a design approach they will of course proceed.
While they showed drawings, not even utilities have been approached yet and the City has not agreed to even do the project. It will cost $3 million from start to finish according to the committee, but seeing how they never approached utilities and they have just started to get neighborhood input, the price is sure to change.
It reminded me of one of those tv shows, like "Shark Tank," where entrepreneurs show their ideas to the investors hoping to get a bite. None of the residents or the business owners present bit. They didn't like the idea and felt the plan would better serve streets that "went somewhere" into the Grove, like 27th or 32nd Avenues.
But as usual, the Village Council never saw a committee they weren't willing to start, so Council Member Felice Dubin and activist Patrick Sessions will co-chair that new committee.

Something similar to this would be a ideal model and would really show to the county, the state and the world that the Grove is serious in attracting good attention by catering to everyone.

A True Bike Lane in the Grove? I'm I dreaming?
I wasn't at this meeting, but I was watching it on TV at home. While I appreciate the City's efforts in trying to beautify Bird Ave, as a resident who lives on Elizabeth St near the intersection of those two streets, I can't support the plan they have put forth so far. It would make it near impossible for me to get to work or school without going significantly out of my way.
The input given by the residents is far more valuable than any traffic study that the City can do and I hope that they were listening to those concerns with open ears.

$3M is a ridiculous amount for that small of a job. Time for the costs of city construction jobs to come back to reality.
Grand Ave. cost a lot more.
Bird is not even in the top 3 streets requiring immediate work in the grove. It's fine the way it is. 27th ave, McDonald and Tigertail all need improvement so much more than bird, which is fine the way it is and would remain find the way it is for 15 more years.
Are they throwing darts at a map down at city hall?
I read the project summary at the CIP website and at first I thought it was just about lighting and sidewalks but it seems the plan is to also mill and re-pave the McDonald to Aviation section and maybe some other part to put in medians. Something to do with the "left-turn problem". What problem are they talking about? Spending money they don't have is the problem. It's not a busy street though it could use some sidewalk improvements. Seems the City and construction companies are in bed as usual.
