Why we don't like the MPA, the Ticket Nazis

It finally happened -- someone actually got a parking citation while they were at the meter down the block buying the parking ticket!

This happened on Fuller Street, about 10 pm on Saturday night. A guy was paying for parking and when he got back, the nasty meter maid was ticketing his car. She would not take his ticket as proof and she stayed there and argued with the guy for about half an hour. I think he prevailed in the end, no one is sure. But this attitude and the low down practices of the Miami Parking Authority are the reason people avoid Coconut Grove. We know this for a fact.

On Saturday I parked on Rice Street, as usual the meter there was broken so I had to walk around to Oak Avenue to get the parking ticket, I thought to myself, "Sometimes I have to go to two or three meters to find one that works, which brings me far from my parked car, do the meter readers know this? Do they realize people may be around the corner paying for parking because it's the only place to find a working machine?"

And lo and behold, the Ticket Nazi with the citation book did just that to the dude on Fuller Street. No class, no benefit of the doubt, no recourse.

coral gables parking/meter maids are also super sneaky, south miami too. they ride around in their little golf cart things.

what if we staged a protest or something? half the meters or blue box things are broken. are you supposed to not park there are no suitable meters in working condition nearby? or is it a conspiracy? they don't fix the broken machines knowing they will lead to more tickets....

This is a very old and important issue that has been raised over and over to our so-called "official representatives" in City Hall. What have guys like Sarnoff/Nelson and others done or said about it? Try e-mailing them if you feel like wasting the time..

I guess this is the only way the city can pay their half ass employees who don't do ch... and need to make up for that budget cut!
Plus the MPA are in charge of all the ridiculous sidewalk payments,etc.etc. which I have personally sat at the office and seen how nasty they are and how 4 employees don't make one!

That's HER! That's the old woman who I got into the argument with over the parking issue at the Grove Montessori! If you have her name or any kind of identification for her, please send it my way. I am going to write a follow-up letter to the MPA. This is getting ridiculous. If I have to personally call every official at the MPA, I will, and I will also show up at their offices on a regular basis if that's what it takes to get someone there to resolve this.

I was parked in front of Mr. Moe's adding fresh Maine Lobster to the Winner Winner Lobster Dinner machine when the meter maid was writing another car a ticket. I asked her if I could run in drop off the live lobsters which I showed her and she said "no problem". 3 MINUTES LATER I came out and had a ticket on my car. I drove around for 20 minutes trying to find her and when I finally caught up to her she said "Once I get into the ticket writing mode, I can't stop, I just write".
If I did not take the 20 minutes to track her down I would have been stuck with the ticket.... Unbelievable!!!!!!!

One way that the Grove can stand out from other communities as a great place to visit, shop, stroll, dine and enjoy, would be to get rid of all the parking meters. The improved good-will should attract more people that will spend more money and generate more profits for businesses and more taxes. Parking meters, tickets and towing cars are not a very friendly way for a so called friendly community to treat its guests. Ticketing for J-walking in a village that wishes to promote more pedestrian traffic should be discouraged as. What the Grove needs are friendly police officers that help make our residence and guests feel welcome and safe. Harry Emilio Gottlieb

If I go to a parking station and it doesn't work I put a note on my card that the station is not working; it is not my responsibility to walk to all the other meters til I find one that is working; it is their responsibility to keep them working.

The meter person should be checking parking stations to make sure they are in working order instead of letting them go for weeks on end.

I second getting rid of meters at least on grand. We should continue the system that is in place further down in west grove. If your worried about people never moving then just put a 2-3 hour limit on parking. You go to the machine and get your ticket (FOR FREE). You put it in your window. If you stay longer then the time limit, then give them a ticket. Free parking would bring way more people into the grove.

I am working in a city with a population of 500k. They have very nice new theaters, and only charge meter parking M-F 9-5, no charge on weekends. What a concept. I have not even seen a ticket writer. Makes it a joy to go into the downtown for dinner without worry.

Is there no way we can get signatures or somthing to change policy or law? I'll fly back just to sign this.

i work for one of the blood banks and i would love to come to the grove more often but 60 dollars to park a blood mobile is very steep. South miami and coral gables dont charge us for parking and in turn we may purchace tickets for events going on in the area to give to our donors. Its a great relationship and i would really like to see coconut grove become its own municipality.

I am not condoning the stupidity of doing this, but the Verrus pay to Park system alleviates all these problems. Plus as soon as you pay for parking via your cell phone, that is the proof of meter payment and can be used to immediately dismiss a ticket. Verrus.com. I use it all the time and it's better than coins or the blue machines any day!

Have stopped going to the Grove (used to eat & party there 5 times a week)- & I live in S Grove. Racked up $375 in fines & penalties over a 5 month period, in addition to the max I always paid. The Rice, Oak, Virginia machines are constantly "down";
tried to get help from the call in no's, the system & the people I spoke with were absolutely useless,
I was told I would get a ticket, even though all 3 machines were not working - I should search for a machine that works - the latest fiasco took 45 mins.
Too much, too arrogant - No More for me!
