Sour Grapes Award

We have a new feature, it's called the Sour Grapes Award. This is one award you don't want.

Our first Sour Grapes Award goes to a sour old man named Sid Sussman, who saw fit to tear apart the Great Grove Bed Race this year, out of pure jealously.

His nasty letter is here, in the Herald.

Sid has been bullying the Bed Race committee since the beginning. I was recently asked to change our Twitter name, but I own that name Sid, so I am not changing it. It's a generic name, it belongs to me. It's http://twitter.com/grovebedrace

Sid is a sour old soul. So Sid can take his jealousy and pride and shove them where the sun don't shine Sid gets the first Sour Grapes Award. Congrats Sid!

What a jerk! He forgets to mention that this bed race is also to raise money foe charity!

While some actions I dissagree with, Sid is right in setting the record straight. Grape does this all the time and he does not consider himself a sour grape.

However I do agree the Grove is filled with sour old grapes that have become a pain in the rear for anything new and different.

Sorry Grape but Sid doesn't sound sour. I don't know him from a whole in the wall, but all he did was give the history of the race which was all true. Your post is pretty harsh. Even if you thought he was being petty, does that mean you need to stoop to his level? That doesn't make the Grove appealing or a destination for visitors. Thicker skin Grape.

He sounds nothing like a sour grape in my opinion.

The guy wants to set the record straight. What's so wrong about that? The letter isn't nasty either. How is the letter nasty?

The guy has been harrasing us since day one. That's how he has been nasty. Since day one. I am on the committee. I know. OK?

As someone who doesn't live in the Grove, and isn't racing a bed, I have to say that Sid, indeed, sounds pretty bitter.

Since there are going to be beds racing through Coconut Grove, "The Coconut Grove Bed Race" is the only thing you could call it that would make a lick of sense.

He then accuses the event of "being something it's not." Again, if it's a bunch of souped-up beds racing through Coconut Grove, I don't know what Sid's on about.

I gotta be honest, I couldn't see any point in this guy's letter. Is he mad that he's not involved or that different charitites will be benefitting or that this year will be bigger and better?

I just don't understand what his issue is, and to be honest, I don't care. This should be a good time. Who's ready to party in the grove?

Don't know Sid, but he sounds very bitter. Why would you want to rain on the parade of a re-vitalized event that we have been missing for years? Yes, it won't be the same, but at least its coming back in some form and for that - we should be happy and celebrate the positive.

Sid forgot to mention he had sold out way before the end of the bed races. He also forgot to mention that the name Coconut Grove Bed race was trademark by the president of the Coconut Grove Chamber President at the time, Sylvia Cejas. She did this right after MDS dropped Taste in the Grove and The Bed Races in 1998 when MDS felt the events did not generate enough money to justify the effort.

Sour grapes my ass.
I don't know Sid either but it seems to me he meant no harm with his letter. In fact , he and his buddies did a great thing in creating this event twenty or so years ago.

They should be lauded and applauded for their past efforts.

Apparently the current bed people swiped Sid & Friends' bed idea to create their own Get Drunk for Charity event.
He is hurt. I'm not surprised. Who can blame him?

Anon 2:00 pm - are you kidding? swiped his idea? If he was once involved - which I have seen no evidence of - I highly doubt he single handedly ran the event. But most importantly, he bailed on the idea and abandoned his role in it.

Why shouldn't someone say, "hey that was a cool event, let's bring it back!" If he wanted to be involved in help it along, I'm sure the committee would have accepted him with open arms, they did ask for anyone that wanted to be involved to come to the meetings. This guy is a classic, self-aggrandizing narcissist, who has apparently decided to try to rain on everyone's parade and the hard work of many. that makes him a jerk.

It's fine to set the record straight that it's not the same event but let's see what the they have in common: They both help/ed charities, the Jaycee's are still volunteering, it's a good time for Grove residents and Merchants. It's all good in my book. Where he sounded like an ass is when he said "don't try to be something your not". That last line showed his true colors. Sour grape? Absolutely.

In respect to the Bed Race comments, I have lived in the Grove since 1974 and grew up in Shenandoah from Elementary school.I have all the documents, publications and newsletters that list me and the other board members from the old event. We put our money and knowledge on the line to raise money for jerry's kids with MDA and did not piggy back off the efforts of others.
Sylvia Cejas can speak for her actions. Thanks for naming your event The Great Grove Bed Race so the Bed Races of Old will always be remembered for being the first and the best. Sid Sussman Consultant for Charity Fundraising 1984-2009 Lic.281608-1
