Miami 21 hearing is today

The Miami 21 hearing is starting just about now. We think the problem with Miami 21 is that Mayor Manny Diaz is associated with it. I think that is what is prejeducing many. Many do not trust the mayor in any way, shape or form.

That might be the crux of the matter and that may be what many need to look into. Separate the mayor from the plan and see what comes up.

Just a thought . . .

Here is how Ernie Martin feels from the Urban Environment League blog.

I just came from there and it was very interesting indeed to listen to all of the comments. It was equally interesting to learn that people you assumed would be against were actually for Miami 21. It looks like it is going to be a long night!

The problem was the plan was just too flawed. Manny Diaz wanted it passed but it was too complicated and too unfinished.

Watch. Manny Diaz will not even ask to have Miami 21 fixed and he will put it on the agenda for late August.

Fellow transit and Smart Growth Advocates, Do not look at this as a defeat; this is a huge setback, but one that was needed in the circumstances. Comm Sarnoff made deals today that were simply a bully and greedy. One has to go back and think about the goals, the process, and how to transform this city into the one that 80% of the people would like to see. It was great to see the support, the diversity of speakers and I would promote a stronger, positive message that says I’m not moving- I will stay and fight- It was a tough defeat, a battle but not the war… We will rally our troops and demand answers during the upcoming elections. Hopefully we can have a complete commission for such an important vote and hopefully we can all cool off and make some reasonable changes without giving away the city. I think there is an answer and I commend Mayor Diaz for bringing this item to the dais. We must more than ever let our commissioners know that we demand a better city and if there was a clear message tonight- it was Miami wants transit!!! To that point there is an important meeting at the end of August and we must stress to MD County that we must have transit in Miami. Thank-you to everyone for speaking out and bringing all points of view to the table to be heard. Your work is invaluable!!!!!

Advocate.....talking about the battle and the war etc kind of makes you sound loony.
I think the next Mayor (whoever it may be) will revisit Miami 21 and further work with the Communities (not just advocates) to iron out the kinks.

Agreed 150% that we need transit and this doesnt mean buses and trolleys that sit in traffic, it means a rail system.
