How many bikes?

bikes
How many bikes do one of those little bike racks hold? I see six, are there more?

There was a second "summit" meeting last Wednesday about biking issues, they are working on a draft master plan. Bike racks are in the agenda, of course, but that's the least of concerns. You can pretty much lock your bike anywhere, although the Shaq gym area on Grand could use a few more racks, -- cool ones, why not, like the Red guitar on Main -- or more functional ones, like those at Kennedy park. But that's not the issue. Bike Lanes, education, resurfacing of roads, safety issues, that's the real beef. Miami is still the 3rd worst City in the USA to ride a Bike. CI

(another bike Miami @ Mary brickell this Sunday, there's some progress)

We need more bike racks that are cheap and numerous and less photo ops from our politicos.

The Grove needs to prove that it truly is Bike Friendly. We seem to have enough artsy bike racks and certainly have had more then enough photo ops for our self anointed Green Mayor. Let’s really start to cater to all biker riders. Those that use their bikes as their primary means of transportation, casual riders and serious riders. There should be designated bike parking areas with plenty of utilitarian bike racks for casual bike riders. Bike racks should be installed in the sunken space before the Barnacle and across the street from Commodore Plaza. Racks should be installed on Fuller ST and Matilda near school and tennis courts. Racks should be installed in Post Offcie parking lot. A rack in front of the PO could replace one or two benches that are being used by panhandlers to intimidate the customers. The serious bike riders will not us a typical bike rack. They will always keep their bike in sight and never lock it up to a rack. They have no kickstand and will not risk scratching the bike. For the serious biker I suggest the same temporary racks that are used during races. It is a sawhorse configuration made of wood or better yet PVC tubes. The bikes are supported by hooking the seat or handle bars through the horizontal support of the rack. These racks can be easily brought out on the weekends and will help keep our sidewalks uncultured and safer for everyone. This Bike Friendly effort should have been championed long before now by the Coconut Grove Chamber, BID, Merchants and CGVC. More bike racks, more bikers, more consumers, more commerce and more reasons to come to The Village of Coconut Grove. Everyone wins! Harry Emilio Gottlieb

Mr. Gottlieb. Bike racks are nice and dandy. But like you say, people with regular mountain or utility bikes, "battle" bikes will find many spots to secure their bikes. Sure, more bike racks would be nice, but that's NOT the problem, at all. You are right, we do not use the racks for expensive road/speed bikes. They get scratched, and people can steel the accessories, they get banged-up if not stolen. We keep them in sight. So for 80% of the bikes you see out there, racks are NOT the issue. Like I said, BIKE LANES, resurfacing, painting the roads, educations car drivers and bikers on how to safely co-exist, THAT's the issue. Here are a couple of links about the things that are beeing looked at, slowly but surely:

There's a "Master Plan in the works, and a new draft being prepared. You can always send your ideas to Colin Worth, see links, but trust me, racks are the least of our issues. Carlos Iglesia

This morning's bike miami was fun, we had a wet moment when we had to wait out the rain under the underpass. CI, I looked for you but maybe I did not recognize you in your biking gear! I broke away when we hit Calle 8 and then went for some huevos rancheros at la Taqueria Mexicana. Hope the rest of the trek was equally fun, Tina.
