Hogging the parking spots -- for free

cab
A reader sent this in. He took the photo on Sunday, at 6 pm, while driving around and around looking for parking.

He wants to know why the cab drivers continue to be allowed to commandeer Virginia Street, park for free and take up all the parking spots. This has been a problem for years. Is it ever going to end?

Don't cab drivers bring people in to the grove?

It seems to me, if you kick them out, you kick out the people they bring. We should want them here.

Why were the beadmakers made to spend money on reserving parking spots then? They brought in 500 people, more than any cab driver and they were charged for four parking spots for the night. And I actually bring people in weekly, can I get free parking, too, at metered spots?

I'm taking an out of town guest to lunch today, where can I park free for bringing in a guest?

Stupid comment anonymous. Cabs need to keep moving, not park and sit in metered spots all day. I'm surprised the greedy MPA allows this, they are losing money.

At hotels Ive stayed at in just about every city the cabs are not right out in front of the hotel like they are at Mayfair. They are usually around a corner or they get paged by the hotel to come in for a pickup. A better place for cabs to hangout would be in the lot off of Oak that is usually 80% empty. Im sure a deal could be worked out with the owners of that lot.

See your point anonymous 10:59, but agree with Blind Mind. Cabs should be called by hotels and restaurants. Or they can drive around looking for fares. Sitting in metered shouldn't be allowed.

They come to Virginia Street to sleep in their cars in a safe environment. What better place to nap in your car than in the shade in the Grove? Most are not in the cab stand, which has two spaces. The cab regulations say they are not allowed to park outside the cab stand.

Anon 10:59 - how are they bringing people to the grove by parking and napping/reading at meters in the grove?

If they were driving around town (areas other than the grove) than there's a chance they might happen upon a fair to the grove.

You got one, go ahead and use it from time to time.

Leave them alone, it is convenient to have them on virginia street. There is so much parking in the grove including that huge municipal garage which is always 99% empty.

Someone from MPA is making all these positive parking comments regarding the grove. No one that lives or visits the grove would make these positive comments only an MPA staffer, director or maybe MPA has hired a PR firm to make positive comments about them on this blog?

Anon @ 10:02 you couldnt be more incorrect. I live in the Grove, quite close to Cocowalk actually, and there is a ton of parking in the area. I drive by it daily. The lot on Mary is always empty. The garage at Cocowalk has plenty of parking. There are other lots in the area that have plenty of parking. The problem is that either people are too lazy to walk a few blocks, to cheap to pay an extra buck or two, or too apt to just bitch about parking because its much easier to bitch about it. I go to the beach often. I could complain that there are never meters available close to the sand but why bother? Instead, I park at the garage where I know its $1/hr on 17th and Meridian and walk a good 4-5 blocks to the beach. I find the number of complaints about parking to be amazing and somewhat funny. Just walk a few blocks, its good for you.
