Enhancing the post office

It's not a definite project, but a few Grove artists have met with Postmaster David Boardman to discuss dressing up the wall on the McDonald side of the building. Maybe one other wall, too.

The artists are preparing a proposal which would include doing some sort of tile mosaic art. There may even be some plants and shrubs put on the lower side of the wall to detract graffiti artists from getting close the wall.

At first some other artists in the Grove wanted to make it a community project, involving artists from the Village West and maybe some children. But at this point, it looks like it will be a threesome of local adult artists.

Why not get the 'kids' involved? Would send a much more positive message instead of making this project 'commercial' with noted artists.

Way to go, artists. We actually could use more murals on blank walls.

Anon 4:08,
Lessee here. Three local artists decide it might be a community enhancement to volunteer their talents and services to brighten up an otherwise blah blank wall at one of the gateways to the village center. What's not to like?
Oh, they didn't also want to also make it a community service kids-day-out which would require a whole separate set of issues deciding whose kids would participate, who would keep the kids out of traffic, who would pick up and supervise the kids and so on.
My guess is that the artists simply wanted to do a good deed within the scope of their talents and didn't realize that they would be expected to be social workers as well.

I agree to keep it to adult artists for now. I love kids, I have them myself. But the coordination of who gets to paint, how not to get hurt (ie. run over), what should be painted, the mess, etc. may a bit much for new project. See how it goes. The area could use some sprucing.

The Grove Post Office has improved a great deal since the unnecessary chopping down of the 10 mature mahogany trees last year and the demolishing of the parking lot. Much time and effort has been invested by our community to work with the USPS in improving the PO situation and helping them to become better Coconut Grove neighbors. We are also most grateful to State Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Commissioner Marc Sarnoff for arranging three interventions with the USPS management. The purpose of enhancing the Post Office walls with vines, a mural or a mosaic is to help protect it from graffiti taggers that have been using it as a blank canvas for years. The corner of Grand and McDonalds is one of the main entrances to our Grove Village. It is a highly visible corner that will be seen by millions of people in the years to come. Covering that important Post Office wall with vines, a mural and or a mosaic is a wonderful effort being made by the USPS and our community. Including community involvement, especially students from the neighborhood may help guarantee that the walls will be considered off-limits by taggers. Lets fully support this effort to help improve the Grove Post Office, enhance our Village, reduce graffiti and increase art in public places. Harry Emilio Gottlieb

Thank you Harry. Well said.

Note: The NET office has a Graffiti Buster team that will clean up spray paint on public property. All it takes one phone call to the NET office.
