Would resident parking decals work?

People are talking about having parking decals for locals who would like to pay monthly or weekly for the decal.

A Grove resident would then be able to park at any metered spot without having to fiddle with the meters. The fees can be negotiated.

One problem I see up front is the time limit. How long will a car be able to park for free and are the meter attendants able to keep track? I have seen this done in many places where parking is free -- the tires are marked with chalk by the parking attendants as they make their rounds, and then if the car is not moved within a certain time limit, the driver is ticketed or warned. The attendant can tell if the car was moved by the position of the chalk mark and/or the color of the chalk.

They do this in the Hamptons in Long Island. Of course they allow free parking in the Hamptons, too. They are more civilized than we are.

They would if the city would take down some meters to reserve a few streets for resident parking only. There are meters on the most random streets that never get used (i.e. Aviation and Bird by 27th Ave). Plus, that would solve your time-limit problem.

Nobody wants to park at Aviation to come into the Grove to get a meal or shop. I am picturing these meter people bending over to check a tire mark and getting a boot in the back side by a resident.

I hate how miami beach has those resident areas. I dont want that here. It makes parking for tourists and guests all that much harder.

Resident Parking has worked well for many years on South Beach. So why has it taken so long for our leaders and municipal parking management to implement a similar successful Residential Parking System in Coconut Grove? All that is required is a call or e-mail to Miami Beach and inquire how to set it up. There is no need to spend $50K on a consultant pal of a city official and 6 months researching, lots of meetings and debates to determine a demand, traffic study, pros and cons. I am sure we can use some common sense and figure out the best way to make Coconut Grove Resident Parking happen sooner then later.
