They mean business; do not question the cops

Crime is up around the Grove (car break ins, etc.) but the police are busy giving tickets with their speed trap on South Bayshore Drive.

I hate to complain about it since people do speed in that area, but I think the car breakins are more important and a flashing light or empty police car sitting there would help slow down the speeding cars.

A funny thing happened to my friend. When he attempted to question one police officer about why and how long they planed to be giving out speeding tickets on South Bayshore, he was hit with a jay walking ticket!

The photo here is by my friend, not sure if it was before or after his little predicament.

The "selective" mode of traffic law enforcement in and around the Grove is disturbing.

Has anyone ever seen a cop writing tickets for left-turning red light violators at US1 & 27th Ave? That intersection is absolute chaos in the afternoon.

Too bad for Harry on the jaywalking ticket. Just goes to show - don't challenge a Miami cop's ego.

I wonder what sort of ticket I'd get if I asked the policeman regularly posted inside Milam's to move his car from the fire lane.

Much like PMS, it is "that time of the month" for cops in Miami-Dade. Watch out... they are Everywhere right now - not fighting crime, but hanging out behind bushes!

The fact that Harry got a j walk ticket is obviously arbitrary. What happens to a citizens rights, who does question an officers intent? Something very similar happened to my husband who would not back down when an officer was hassling a homeless person right here in the center Grove. He was told to move on (husband) but he stood his ground. I admired him for standing up for someone less fortunate, who was down. One can move people along with due civility. This was a newbie cop and his supervisor arrived in time to smooth things over. As my husband said. I pay my taxes, I have lived here all my life, this is my street. MY HERO

Harry my friend, we need more crosswalks and this is a tourist area are they now going to ticket tourists crossing the streets? We need to protect pedestrians not intimidate them. Maybe they should ticket for not stopping when a pedestrian is in a crosswalk because that happend millions of times a day in Miami. Even with the flashing yellow lights in front of Fresh market and a child with you they do not stop and I have never seen a driver get pulled over for not stopping when pedestrians are in crosswalks.
Also we do not have enough crosswalks and need more all through the grove!

No, the cops usually won't ticket jaywalking tourists unless they have the audacity to 'question authority' like Harry did.
Talking intelligently to some cops makes you a perceived threat to be dealt with, either with ticketbook or taser.

I know there's some state laws that need to change for it to really work properly, but red light and speed cameras would truly help things on our streets.

As the story goes, many, many years ago when the railroad pushed through to Miami, many people rode the train to the terminus, got off, and set up a town. Mostly tents at first. The people looked around and decided that it was time for some police and fire protection, so they sent word with the train for some good old boys to come down for these jobs.

While they waited, they dug a deep pit. When the train arrived with the good old boys, they pushed the boys into the pit. The ones who climbed out became the firemen.

Harry, sorry about the ticket. You may want to fight that one.

Speeders, thieves, drug dealers, scam artists. Obviously, they outnumber the cops.

No matter how hard the police try, the crime will continue.

Unfortunately, South Florida has more than a slight degree of lawlessness. Always has.

Harry needs to take this ticket directly to Commander Martin and ask why dissent and a simple question warrants a ticket for something that is NEVER enforced in Miami.

Everyone here is missing the point? The police aren't fighting crime - they're generating revenue in a tight budget year. That's why speeders and jaywalkers are getting hit... it's easy money. (I'm sure challenging The Man didn't help any either.) Finding one petty criminal doesn't make the $$$ to justify the effort in this down economy. Expect more parking tickets too....

jay walking? WTF? and what the heck is jay walking?
tell ya what, if the cops want to make money, and protect the quality of life here, they should ticket all the people who don't stop at the three way at the intersection of mary and grand, less than 1000 feet from their speedtrap on bayshore.

Most criminals will concur with your opinion that cops suck.

Others will not.

Harry maybe you should go to your good buddy Regalado with this because all those "nice cops" are on his side. I'm sure he could do something about your ticket. Too bad you didn't have his bumper sticker that would have saved you!
