Low quality, high prices, every time

Milam's continues to have the highest prices in the Grove. I don't see how the poor people can afford it. Now, I'm not tryng to be a hater here, I am just stating the facts. I guess I am the fool because I keep going back, but I like to try and support all Grove businesses.

But The Fresh Market is lower priced all of the time, and of course, so is Publix. The Fresh Market's Bistro Meals for $6.99 are superior to Milam's dried out overpriced deli food and there is more of a variety and superior quality at The Fresh Market.

I keep thinking I'll run in there for a thing or two, but it's really getting out of hand now. They have no conscience. The deli items are the most overpriced.

Guess Max Milam wants us all to pay for his store's renovations overnight. But people aren't stupid, at The Fresh Market and Publix the check out lines 10 deep. Milam's has three customers at a time usually. That says it all.

I hate that place- I've been waiting for years for them to go out of business. I go out of my way to drive to the gables publix for grocery shopping.

That whole shopping plaza is a ridiculous waste of space. What we need is a publix, an REI, and a decent bagel joint. The garbage we have there now (milams, home depot) does nothing for me.

The Fresh Market is nice, but the Publix on 27th is a nightmare, no parking, rude employees who do not speak any english, they also do not carry half the items the new Publix in Mary Brickell Village does.

I agreet about that publix on 27th being a disaster, that's why I only go to the publixes (publices?) in the gables. Regardless, the more important issue (to me) is the complete disaster and waste of space that is that shopping plaza.

The home depot seems to be holding its own. I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon. Although it didn't bring with it the apocalypse, again, it just doesn't do anything for me. Shell Lumber serves 80% of my needs, the other 20% is when I need something on a sunday and for that I can easily go to the depot on 8th street.

I'm just frustrated seeing a plaza with so much space, so much potential, and so close to where I live wasted on stores that don't serve my needs.

Home Depot is kept in check by the surrounding neighbors and people who report those massive trucks parking there overnight or when they pile up their storage pods on the inside wall. Their parking lot is rarely full and most of the cars are probably employees' cars. The Grove residents have prevented it from becoming a SW 8th St. disaster.

I agree. However, at the same time we are all, locals and home depot, locked in a no-win scenario. The depot can't expand into the highly profitable monstrosity it would like to, while at the same time it does nothing for locals like me.

I disagree, I needed a new GE Micro-Oven and Home Depot gave me a 10% bottom line discount. Today GE installed it, Great service no problems. Love that store. Alot more Upbeat & alot more high class then Shells. Open till 9:00 PM everyday. GIve them a chance. Lets see who is running into HD when the big Hurricane comes into town. Also lets see who opens up after the big storm clears out of here. Great store to have in our backyard living in a Hurricane Hole.

Surpisingly, the Grove Home Depot is riddled with excellent customer service and a spacious uncrowded environment and easy parking. It's where I go first!

I live a few blocks from the Publix on 27th Avenue and shop there all the time, sometimes twice a day. I'm a gringo who doen't speak a word of Spanish, but I smile and get along fine with everyone there, even when we have to call on a bilingual staffer to resolve some issue. As for parking, sometimes I have to circle around a bit or maybe park in the back, but I always find a space in due course.
Here's the secret formula...leave your attitude in the car and be willing to walk more than fifty feet to the front door.

I have hope that the new Milam's will be a better store. I doubt the prices will improve (to me, Milam's vs. Fresh Market is six of one, half dozen of the other), but I hope the experience and quality does.

I also travel to the Publix on Monza in Coral Gables. 27 avenue Publix is a nightmare. Have not been in Milam's in years it's disgusting. Fresh Market is great for milk but not for every day shopping, the also have an excellent cheese department. Home Depot on Bird has great customer service and everyone is very friendly. I also see many who were on top of the Say No to home Depot band wagon in there shopping.

As usual I think we need a Target, or Costco or something functional in that mall taht we do not have in this area. Sound like Milam's should go and maybe we can get a store that the Grove needs!

Milams to me is a last minute place. I compare it to gas stations and quick marts, just with more selection.

I have also been very surprised by the home depot. Very polite and knowledgable employees. Nothing like 8th st, but this is only because of those who fought to keep it small and neighborhood like.

I sometimes go to the 27th Publix and its not bad if you pick the older check out people - they don't have an attitude and can actually participate in a conversation - one guy actually counts your change back which is big time retro. However, I'm going to give all Mr. Falco's followers a tip here. Publix on the River 311 SW 7th St Miami, FL 33130-2917 Phone: (305) 860-9477

Quick shot up 95 (check Mapquest) and park underneath the building. If you're there at 7am you'll be the only one there (except for me on Wednesdays). Other times are fine too. Get Rebecca at the checkout. She'll take care of you and even run your coupons without a complaint. The place is awesome!!! You don't have to deal with the angry upper middle class Moms at Fresh Market who are begging for a spanking and the 10 year old olive oil at Milam's. Life really couldn't be better.

Of course the help at Home Depot is friendly, they are just so happy when they have a customer. And here's a tip for you when we get a hurricane warning, they can't sell plywood and Shell never runs out. Remember that.

The Home Depot turned out well. Not so sure at first, but they're keeping things clean and professional. As for Milam's, ugh. Too expensive and not worth it. I go to the Publix near U of M.

Winn Dixie in South Miami for the major grocery items.
Costco for bulk-Tp, Pt, wine, Pellegrino & especially cheeses. Fresh Market for produce, deli, condiments such as vindaloo sauce and beef on sale. Best butcher is La Estancia Argentina across from Nordstrom. It is also well priced and yo heve 15 min free parking inside garage by the store. Milk at CVS. But when you are in a hurry, Milams.

Milams is not that awful and I don't believe Max Milam is satan, either. The store definitely needs redoing and cleaning and we should all wait and see. If you've been to the Milam's on Bird Road you can really see the difference between them. The one in the Grove is in the same spot that countless grocery chains occupied before them. They are way overdue for this renovation.

I went to the Publix the other day across from UM as I was in the hood. I swear, never again. Forget the overcrowded small aisles, their produce department was wretched. Everything pre-packaged and not great produce to start out with, even if you wanted only one. And what's with the kazillion plastic bags tied in knots. I'll take FM or Milam's any day.

Milam's sucks, but I occasionally go there purely out of laziness and because I don't want to waste the time to go to Publix on the river, or to get rage by goint to the one on 27th (I honestly feel nothing but hate and loathing for humanity by the time I leave there - every single time).

I just wish that instead of a giant milam's, we had a full home depot taking up that whole plaza. I love the HD, and I go there regularly. Best store in CG, and I'm so happy to spend my money there were you get a fair deal, great service, and I'm only disppointed by what they can't carry due the crybaby whining fools who protested them and capitalism in general.

I am with you on Milams.
They are so overpriced and every time I eat their meat I get sick!
Furthermore, their seafood is not fresh.
Everyone at FRESH is so nice and accomodating. And FRESH is clean.
I don't understand how Milams can stay in business - I wish the Grove would boycott them.

I think there's a deal in the works that we do not know about. The question is: Will there be a new sign, and will that sign say Milam's?

Hey That guy...If the Home Depot wanted to have the big store you so desire then let them pay me and my neighbors for our support in changing our zoning laws. They wanted to come into an area not zoned for the store you desire and get the zoning changed for nothing but the throwing of money at a few well-placed political insiders. I suggest that allowing HD to do that is the anti-capitalist thing and not waiving public rights for a single company's profits thus creating a very un-capatalist fair playing field...Does HD need me to subsidized their profits?

And by the way...Anytime you would like to meet and discuss issues please feel free to contact me...I am easy to find...tonight I will be at the Village of Center Grove Neighborhood meeting as I am on the Board. You may not agree with me but I doubt you would find me a crybaby, a whiner, and certainly not a fool.

They have sickened me with their spoiled food for the last time. Sour milk, bad fish, bad meat, deli-food that looks like vomit, bread as hard as a rock- no more. they just lost a lot of money, because I'm not going back. I'm tired of being mad all the time.

Fresh Market does have low prices and freshest food. Try the parmesan encrusted tilapia. Had it last night. Easy to prepare - put in pan and bake for about 20 minutes. Add a fresh spinach salad and quinoa. Quick, healthy meal for about $7.

Thanks to Leo and Margaret behind meat/ seafood counter for telling me to try this special.

Coconut groves zoning laws are insane, often abused, rarely understood, and were not written in any part by any one who is currently involved in the government or city in general. The Zoning office and board regularly appear and admit to being totally lost.

I only shop at whole foods - for everything... haven't stopped in a milams or publix or fresh market in years. I wish there was a whole foods in the grove in the place of milams, but it's not too far for me to drive to the one in the gables. Before that one, I drove to pinecrest or south beach. None of the other groceries have the everyday products/brands I enjoy. I don't feel sorry for those in the grove who have 3 nearby publix options to drive to when the 3 whole foods are even further away for me. And milams and fresh market im sure sell mostly the same brands as publix just in different settings.

I live close to the Publix on 27th ave., and although I must agree that the experience there can be hellish sometimes, I have learned to go in there either really early or really late in order to avoid the chaos. I've only walked into Milams a handful of times and I must agree with other readers about the horrible quality of their food. Fresh market is definitely nicer, but at least the food in Publix doesn't look dried out/old as it does at Milams... Yuck!
