Commodore Plaza becomes party central

commodore3
The Summer Rendezvous kicked off on Saturday night, that's where Commodore Plaza was made into an actual plaza -- no cars allowed.

commodore2
I am told that about 2000 filled the street to eat, drink and dance. Music played on each end of the street, and in between, all live.

commodore1
The restaurants actually brought their tables out into the street. The Summer Rendezvous will continue each Saturday for the next four weeks. If the program is a success, the party will go on every Saturday night, where the street will be closed for the night and turned into a pedestrian party zone!

I was there about 11 pm, I guestimated about 500 people were there. I was told that 2000 passed through during the night. Don't believe what you read in the Herald. Their reporter was there at 1 am; most people started the day at 11 am; most were too tired to make it past midnight.

Anonymous I just counted over 60 people in these three photos not counting the band members. How do you say only 150 were there? We went by about 10 pm and we were a group of 8. There about 1000 people or more.

This is a great idea and great for the grove (even if a little unfair to businesses not on commodore). I hope it's successful and continues. I think it will be.

Besides, in re my parenthetical, when has this city or the grove in particular not obviously played favorites?

Was very crowded when we got there. My wife even commented on how many people showed up after fireworks. Was very well received and a very nice event.

Have always championed the idea that Commodore Plaza be a pedestrian friendly area.
Every major cosmopolitan city in the world has one why Miami does not is beyond believe.

I am surprised that Brian above now expects Grape to round up the specials - the restaurants and stores are struggling and you want them to do more. Grape doesn'tr get pd to do this for you. Most of them already have Code 33, Taurus was giving free food/drink - there was music - how much more do you want? Just come out and patronize the restaurants and not just drain them. What will Brian be doing while Grape is doing all this groundwk?

Congratulations to all those forward thinking, hardworking folks that really care about Coconut Grove and made the fireworks event in Peacock Park and the pedestrian Commodore Plaza a stunning success. Bravo to all of you that thought of it, fought for it, made it happen and brought some much need success to the Grove. Thanks for all those folks that attended and proved that the Grove can be a fun place to visit when there are fun things to do. Lets do more of this. Lets turn the glasshouse into a wonderful restaurant and attract more folks to the park. Lets install more utilitarian bike racks and attract more families on bikes. Lets decorate our village with more art in public places, like sculptures, murals and mosaics. Lets provide a parking meter free evening or two or better yet no parking meter fees for Sunday. Lets have friendlier police keeping our village safe and not just giving out more tickets. Lets have friendlier parking meter personal. Lets encourage people to visit the Grove and not intimidate them with speed traps on Bayshore, parking tickets and towing. Lets pick up any trash we see. Lets reduce and if at all possible eliminate the graffiti and banners that contribute to creating a blighted appearance. Every community goes through its cycles of success. It is time for the Grove to once again be a success and a destination worth going to and enjoying. Harry Emilio Gottlieb

Really? you think I'm just waiting around for Tom to post stuff? Or trying to get the merchants to squeeze more money out? Don't be a jackass. Specials even if the specials aren't great, they are at least a simple and effective means for the merchants such as George's to attract more people. ESPECIALLY in these tough economic times.

Also if you're going to criticize people, use your name. Own up.

I do my part to help bring events to the grove, see barcampmiami, facebook garage, and refreshmiami.

and grape DOES get paid, he makes money from this site. He doesn't give the ads away for free (nor should he). I suggested he post them because his site is the most popular grove site, so the merchants would get more exposure through him.

If the merchants on commodore plaza want me to post something on MY site with specials/deals I'd happily do it, there just aren't that many grovites reading my blog.

p.s. did sekai go out of business ?

The idea is pretty cool. We didn't make it all the way to Commodore Plaza, we stopped at a bar in Main Highway. However, I can say that the traffic was pretty bad after the fireworks, I'm sure that would drive a lot of people away. Plus, it takes people some time to notice that things like this are going on. I'm sure it'll get better in the coming weeks. Anyway: keep up the great work!

I live in the Grove, and go out here every weekend. I am a 20 something, and i was really excited about the fireworks "after party" on Commodore plaze sat. night. I even spread the word to all of my friends telling them how fun it would be to join the big party after the show. I was very dissapointed and surprised at the low turnout. We were at Moe's, and it was DEAD. There was a great band, but only about 5 people on the dance floor. My friends made comments about how I was "wrong" and how lame it was. We ended up having a good time together, but to be honest for the 20 something crowd it was not our scene. I doubt we will be joining again...
