What's up with the leaf blower mess?

My friend Riley Smith picked up on one of my pet peeves in his Real Estate Coconut Blog. It's the messy lawn cuttings and crap all over the swales.

His pet peeve is the stuff laying there on the side of the road, mine is the lawn guys who actually take a leaf blower and blow the stuff away from their client's yard and into the street and everywhere else.

Ever see this? It's all over the Grove; they blow the leaves and grass into the street or across the street into the neighbor's yard. I have a photo here of a guy blowing the stuff all over McDonald Street. Who does he think is going to pick this up?

About one year ago I checked with the folks who send out the very large vacuum trucks with 12 inch piping and flex hoses that go into rain water run off drains. I asked a mid-range manager how much it cost annually to clean out, a. Miamis' drains and b. Dade County drains due to the leaf blowers---------$17-million!

Do they really blow the stuff into the street or into other people's yards and leave it there?

This happens on US1 every week and drives me nuts. What is the point of blowing leaves in the street? Theyre just gonna blow back onto the lawn. Oh, I guess its job security for the leaf blowers?

Leaf blowers should be outlawed. My neighbor's gardener blows leaves in my yard and then my gardener has to blow those leaves out of my yard. Why can't they blow the leaves into huge bags and deliver them to compost areas?

It is against the law to throw paint, oil, dead animals and trash into our street drains and sewers. So it should also be against the law to blow leaves, twigs and debris as well. Leaf blowers should be banned from our community. All they do is move debris from one person’s property to the street, through the drains, into our sewers, filtered through our water recovery system and eventually out into Biscayan Bay. The cost to the city and our taxpayers is astronomical. Our commissioners and especially our recently self anointed Green Mayor should pass a referendum to ban leaf blowers all together. Let the homeowners, gardeners and especially our city and county street and parks maintenance crews collect the leaves, twigs and debris with a rake or with a vacuum system. Harry Emilio Gottlieb

I don't understand the purpose of leaf blowers. The wind is just going to blow them back.

Rakes are so much more green. And so less noisy!
There are places that have actually banned blowers because they are so noisy. And the professional firms are supposed to bag up all cuttings and leaves, and then take it away. The weekly trash pickup is not for them, it's for us.

Grape you and I just talked about this the other day. Super annoying and all over the Grove. They also blow the crap from neighbors into other peoples yards and driveways.

Thanks for this timely posting

Look, I cant stand these damn things because they just take one mess and move it elsewhere only to make even more mess in the end. However, let's be realistic. There isnt going to be a ban on leafblowers. Thats a tad dramatic. Requiring the blowers to bag dead leaves and debris in paper compost bags is a much more feasible and realistic solution.

When I lived in the northeast and had TONS of leaves every fall, this is what we did. We then took the compost bags to the compost dump where they would decompose and the town would later resell the compost (Im pretty sure the resold it not gave it away for free...its been awhile)

According to those at The City (our City) Landscapers are not allowed to use the trash piles to dispose of their stuff. They are supposed to haul it away. So not only is blowing in the street not allowed landscapers cannot use the trash piles! They can however bag it and then throw it in the owners garbage can. And Solid waste has also confirmed that leaves should only be bagged when in a trash pile anyway. Trash piles are designed for larger pieces not leaves and as a reminder not allowed as well: mattresses, appliances, construction debris or hazardous material.

I disagree with "blind mind" you can make it illegal. A lot of communities, especially in California (ie) such as Beverly hills have done so. One reason for the ban is because of the pollution it creates. There is a lot of stuff, such as decomposed fecal matter, from dogs, cats, Raccoons etc which was never meant to be blown up into the air where it can cause respiratory problems. Just because someone invented the leaf blower does not mean that we should have allow it to be used. The noise is horrendous, and the action (blowing from one area to another) is ludicrous. A beautiful place like the Grove should not have to put up with this. I moved to the Grove five winters ago, and at first the apathy to this situation enraged me....I now go inside, close the doors and windows and wait for it to pass. But I am ready for action to ban it

Santa Barbara California banned all gas powered leaf blowers due to noise pollution.

I watch the leaf battle play itself out every week on day Ave. It just gets blown back and forth across the street.

I am not really into big government, but this is something that I think is reasonable and would force these guys to do their damn job. I chew out my own landscaper because I continually catch his guys blowing the leaves under our own shrubs.

They are a nuisance, they create noise pollution and the could and should be banned. Think of how much more peaceful it would be without all that racket.

I thought they blew this stuff into a pile and took it a away or left it in a pile in the swale for pick up. Really, do some of these "landscape maintenance" people just blow it into the streets, drains and other people's yards? That can't be legal.

Worse still, the yard workers next door loved to blow leaves into my yard.

Whatever happened with this problem? I just closed my windows again for the 3rd time today because of leaf blowers. Could you find out if anyone is doing anything about this noise and air pollution? Thanks
