The Grove is all prepared for the No Barriers Festival

shake1
Everyone is abuzz at Shake-A-Leg in anticipation for tonight's opening of the No Barriers Festival.

The whole Grove is buzzing, in fact. The village is looking forward to hosting the a great group of people. There is a circulator running starting today and running all weekend, that will bring guests from Shake-A-Leg to the Center Grove, it will pick up people at various hotels and other locations and just run non-stop during daylight and early evening hours.

There is a lot going on this weekend at Shake-A-Leg and all around the Grove.

Above is our own Jack King, member of the Waterfront Advisory Board, working on a boat ignition. At left, even the puppies are helping to get the place ship shape for the nautical festival. This couple is shrinkwrapping sandbags.

Chris Tavantzis, a Grovite, has designed and built this proto-type "ChrisTrike," which allows a wheelchair to roll up a ramp and steer it. He'll be around all weekend. He is covering the coolest part of the bike, but wants to save that for the No Barriers guests, so he can unveil it to them first.

John Muir was getting lighting set up in the hanger. And everyone seemed to be participating in setting up for the guests.

The sailboats are in the water, rigged, and ready to go. The No Barriers people usually hold their events up north, in the mountains and places like that, so this all-water event is something new and exciting for them. Let's all show them a great time.

My wife volunteered at the dinner last night and said it was an incredibly good time. LOTS of great local restaurant food from the Ritz Carlton and Jaguar just to name a couple. I don't know for sure if they donated this gratis but regardless they should be commended.
As always, Shake-A-Leg Miami serves to help the disadvantaged find freedom and ability in watersports - but don't forget the other activities like yoga and arts! I've found volunteering there to be one of the most rewarding elements of my life.

*New volunteers are always needed and welcomed. No experience necessary - you can find the form and orientation schedule at their website www.shakealegmiami.org
