Grove Bucks are coming to the Grove on the 4th of July
It actually will be part of the prizes during the Coconut Scavenger Hunt on July 4th. Many of the winners (most in fact) will win these bucks which can be used as currency in participating stores and restaurants. At the end of the week, merchants who accept the bucks will turn them in to a central location for reimbursement.
Participating merchants are the ones who participate in the Scavenger Hunt. So it would behoove them to say "yes" when their block captain or someone from the Merchants Group approaches them.
If a person wins 300 Grove Bucks, that will be like $300.00 Simple. These will have special codings on the back to prevent duplication.
The Merchants Group is hoping to use these at other events, too, like during the Great Grove Bed Race and maybe even during the holidays. I think it could work for bar crawls and just about anything. In the future we could actually have people use them instead of money in Coconut Grove by giving them more for their Grove Buck, like every 100 Grove Bucks would cost $90.00 in cash to buy, so the person with the Grove Bucks would automatically have an extra $10.00 to spend.
Liliana Dones designed the Grove Bucks. This incredible artwork is all her doing. A peacock was suggested for the center image and that's all she had to go on.

Can we turn this in for real money ?
Just wondering if the bank accepts this money as rent (as a owner of a place)
Hope many restaurants a local businesses will participate and accept. otherwise, the prize isn't really worth much at all. Great idea, just needs help on the execution.
"like every 100 Grove Bucks could be $90.00."
Don't you have that backward? Otherwise it would provide a disincentive to consumers.
Personally, I never liked this idea. I have never seen a 'currency' like this, where a consumer is able to go somewhere to cash in for US currency. Kinda like when you go to the arcade and convert to tokens. The conversion gos only one way and either the consumer spends there or has a pocketful of useless tokens. Ya know?
Also, I would be even more disinclined to use this currency until a time when I could be provided a list of where it was accepted. Just saying 'participating merchants' does not really help much.
If a person pays $90.00 and receives $100.00 in return, I think that is an incentive.
And these are prizes in a contest, assuming you are not going to be in the contest, there is no need to worry which merchants. But it should be up to 40 or 50 merchants involved. If not more. Most of the well-known merchants and restaurants have already signed on.
Great idea. A few communities around the country are doing this.
Grape:
Fabulous idea and great reporting!!!
Hooray for the Grove!
"And these are prizes in a contest, assuming you are not going to be in the contest, there is no need to worry which merchants."
Are these just going to be used for this contest? If so... ok... then who cares. But I thought that the idea was to have this used long term. If that were the case then I'd care greatly as to where they were accepted.
Love the design and the idea!
Grape, what is with the 12:56 attitude? A listing of the "participating merchants" should be available, that would be incentive to get particpation for this scavenger hunt. Also, if the idea is to use them for several events or, as you indicate, during the holidays, or "in the future". Where is a listing available? I have a feeling the 40-50 merchants have yet to commit. otherwise, the list would already be available.
The reason we don't reveal the list is because the merchants who are participating are also the locations where the coconuts will be hidden.
Since the bucks are only being used in the contest it makes no sense to tell people the locations ahead of time and ruin the contest.
Trust me, I am running this contest with AnnaMaria, there is no reason for me to lie about how many merchants are participating. And trust me, there is a line around the block for people who want to take part in the fun contest. It's free to enter and the prizes are large.
The Grove is full of downers and complainers Grape. Just a fact of life. Anonymous probably won't be in the contest, is not a merchant and has no reason to even be concerned yet has to open his/her big mouth.
Just love the way you rile up the crowd. I think this is a fab idea. It is just the start, to buy local stay local and support local. They do it with "Berkshares" I was so impressed when up in Woodstock of how loyal people were to the very small assortment of merchants that they had. Even though they could jump in the car and go to a big box store. We have so much more to choose from. Lets support everyone who is here.
"The reason we don't reveal the list is because the merchants who are participating are also the locations where the coconuts will be hidden".
Perhaps this should have been disclosed to avoid all this hoopla!
Attention Complainers:
Grape has been doing an amzing job as well as AnnaMaria in hosting the coconut painting. If the complainers actually went to paint AnnaMaria graciously explianed everything to everyone painting. Again thank you for doing all this work.
So all you do nothing complainers , go do something besides complaining and you would know what's going on!
Grape I think you should not publish this bitching if they don't write their's names anymore! I am sure it's the same few do nothing people complaining all the time!
Lisa and Lana summed up my thoughts exactly.
I probably wont be participating but I think its a cool idea because its something different. Whether it works or not, no one will know until it actually happens but I think the idea has merit.
