so what's joe sanchez's deal? I looked through his website, and couldn't find any clear indication of his party affiliations.

Does anyone know if Commissioner Sarnoff has endorsed either Sanchez or Regalado for Mayor?

Thanks

Brian, there is no party affiliation, and honestly for a city election it does not matter. The city is on the verge of bankruptcy so choose wisely.

I suggest you talk to Grape and ask him what he thinks of either. He would probably know best since he knows the Grove's history and its daily doings.

Sarnoff will officially announce his support for Regalado this Wednesday at the free fundraiser

The City of Miami is NOT on the verge of bankruptcy. True the City has financial problems and the City's C.F.O. is not telling the real story in reference to the City's finances, but in NO way is the City on the verge of bankruptcy. If it was the bond ratings would be much lower and the State would be stepping up control. Do you have evidence or are you just throwing that 'verge of bankruptcy' out there for effect?

Sarnoff is officially announcing his support for Regalado? Didn't he recently say that it would be inappropriate for him as Commissioner to support one candidate over another?

Like Sarnoff I would think that Sanchez or Regalado would announce their party affiliation for the party that paid for that affiliation.

I have only looked up the treasure accounts for Regalado, but I can say that he has received no money from any party.

I can only assume (and hope) that Sanchez is on the same boat.

So your arguing that he is not supporting him although he is actually having a fundraiser with the title in his name. I am pretty sure that is an endorsement.

Treasury accounts for the Regalado and Sanchez will only show cash; services from either party will not be shown on those reports. If you remember when Commissioner Sarnoff was running he received services from the Democratic Party for changing from the Republican Party to the Democratic. The Democratic Party rewarded him with phone services and also paid for and supplied him with supplies like campaign signs cards, etc. So just because you do not see any money being given to either candidate by the political parties they can still supply services without it being shown.

I believe that it is irrelevant who is in what party.
The question that you should ask them is what have they done for the Grove.

So Michelle Nemeyer found it offensive to ask people to donate (as she blogged under the invitation to Regalado's party) at a party for a candidate but does not find it offensive to charge $150 for a veggie platter? I think I will go to Regaldo's where I can donate if I want to and get free appetizers.

See Harry Gottlieb's blog under the Regalado invitation for how they voted. Regalado represents the people and Sanchez all of a sudden is running for neighborhoods - too late Joe.

Let’s recall which Miami City Commissioner sided with which issue. We as citizens should support the candidate that fights for the issues, quality of life and future of our community that we believe in.

Home Depot Entering Coconut Grove
Joe Sanchez said YES
Tomas Regalado said NO
Fire Fee Settlement
Joe Sanchez said YES
Tomas Regalado said NO
Court said NO
Miami River Is Dead To Marine Industry
Joe Sanchez said YES
Tomas Regalado said NO
Court said NO
Mercy Hospital Changing Zoning For Related Group 3-Luxury Condos
Joe Sanchez said YES
Tomas Regalado said NO
Court said NO
(Lets not forget that 99% of the time City of Miami Commissioners from other districts support the views and agree to vote along with the Commissioner from the district that requests a referendum. Unfortunately Sanchez, Gonzalez and Spence-Jones did not honor that policy and voted against District 2 Commissioner Sarnoff and in favor of illegal spot-zoning of Mercy Hospital and against the wishes of most Grovites.)
Marlins Stadium Deal ¾ Paid By Taxes ¼ Paid By Marlines
Joe Sanchez said YES
Tomas Regalado said NO
Marlins Stadium No Bid Contract For Buildings Contractor
Joe Sanchez said YES
Tomas Regalado said NO

Whenever any of these cases went to court, the court sided with Regalado against our very own city. Proving over again that Regalado's No votes are Yes votes for the city of Miami and its people.

Mr. Gottlieb is pulling the number 99% out of his butt! That is not true. Show us your numbers Harry, not fair to make them up. Policy to vote with the Commissioner from the District? Harry how is Sarnoff doing with that policy? Hasn't he voted against issues in the other four districts?

Show us your numbers Harry!

I cant recall any City of Miami Commission vote prior to Sarnoff's election and prior to the Mercy Hospital rezoning vote that so lopsidedly went against the wishes of a Commissioner in his own district. It has always been understood that each Commissioner knew his district better then the other outside Commissioners. The fact is that the court of law ruled that the three outside of district 2 Commissioners where totally incorrect and had illegally created spot zoning to accommodate two businesses and all those folks that had profit to gain by that illegal spot zoning. Its just too bad that more of these cases could not have been taken to court. If more cases had gone to court or if some of our Commissioners actually respected our zoning codes, then perhaps we wouldn't be trying so hard to figure out the best way to implement Miami-21. If a poster truly believe what they are saying, then they should include their name with their comments and recommendations for solutions. If a poster wishes to meet for coffee to discus this topic further, they are welcome to contact me at hgplace@bellsouth.net to set up a time and place that will be most convenient for us to meet. To the poster who asked about party affiliations, both Sanchez and Regalado are Republicans. If you want to learn more about what Joe has accomplished in the time he has been a Commissioner, and about his vision for Miami's future, take a look at the items under the Issues tab at www.joesanchez.com. If you want to know where Regalado really stands, ask someone who listens to his ultra-conservative radio program on Spanish language radio.

I sent Grape the fundraiser invitation when he said he hadn't seen it. I agree with the poster that $150 is a lot to ask from people who don't already know and support the candidate. For that, we are doing a really nice cocktail reception and dinner. The veggie platter is on the menu as a vegetarian option, along with steak, fish, chicken, wine at dinner, dessert. We have had a number of events where no donations were requested. We will also have some lower cost fundraisers. I'll make sure Grape knows so you can come.

Everyone don't forget there will be a debate coming up (September?)

And I think Harry and Michelle should either:

1.)get married (or at least start dating)

2.) Run against each other for Commissioner or maybe throw their hats in for the Mayor's race!

Mr. Gottlieb:

Being somewhat left of center why in the world would you want to support an ultra-conservative? How can that be good for the City of Miami?

June 22, 2009 10:13 PM

Because in local politics party affiliation does not matter. It who works with the residents and who has a "grand vision"

Don't you think that Commissioner Sanchez will work with the residents of the City of Miami? Mr. Gottlieb is voting for an Ulta-Conservative on the assumption that that will be good for Coconut Grove. We need someone that will be good for the ENTIRE city of Miami and not just folks here in the Grove.

June 23, 2009 9:52 AM

I dont understand the problem with being conservative or not.
The point is Regalado has worked with the residents, his residents in his district, which is why he has been elected with over 80% every single term with two of them being over 93%.
He has been helping the grove, just like he has helped Wynwood and the upper east side (the Kubik)
People are only saying things he has done in the Grove because its relative, its the Coconut Grove Grapevine!
Regalado has also won the Urban Environment League Orchid Award two years in a row

The scary thing about Commissioner Regalado becoming Mayor of Miami is the fact he will then appoint Commissioner Sarnoff as Chairman of the City Commission. Mr. Gottlieb now THAT IS SCARY!

Let's just hope and really PRAY that Commissioner Regalado, if he becomes Mayor does not select Commissioner Sarnoff!

Commissioners Spence-Jones would be the logical choice and then Commissioner Gonzalez.

Commissioner Sarnoff is just to0 abrasive and not all that stable when he doesn't get his way. If Sanchez becomes Mayor then that won't be an issue since Commissioner Sarnoff would never be selected as the Chairman since the two can not stomach each other.

Anon 10:38, that's what my parents said when they voted for W the second time.

Anon 11:40, perhaps you didn't follow the prior post. Joe has been attending events all over the Grove, and the campaign has done, and will continue to do, meet and greet events in the Grove where there was no request for campaign contributions. These were relatively small events where people had a real opportunity to talk to Joe one on one and ask questions about his positions on the issues. We did not blast an invitation to Thursday's fundraiser because we did not want to be asking for a significant contribution from people who had not had a chance to decide if they wanted to support Joe. I gave a copy of the invitation to Grape after he asked for it. If you do not attend Thursday, there will be plenty of other opportunities for you to meet Joe at no cost between now and the election, but if you would like to get a really nice evening out with your contribution, you should come.

June 23, 2009 11:58 AM

Kinda hypocritical to be criticizing Regalado for blasting it after you did the same thing. From what it sounds like Grape received it and put it on because "if it happens in the grove its here"
Then you get upset and now its on for the same reason.

June 23, 2009 12:07 PM
Anonymous Michelle Niemeyer said...

I'm not upset. Grape said he hadn't seen the invitation, so I gave it to him. I'm just pointing out that it was not our intention to target this event to people who haven't met Joe or decided if they want to support him. There will be lots of opportunities that don't cost so much. End of story.

If you support Joe, want to contribute $150 or more to his campaign, and would like to enjoy a great dinner with your contribution, please join us. If you don't know if you want to support Joe or don't want to contribute at that level, you will have lots of other chances to come out and show your support or to meet Joe and ask him whatever questions you may have.

My hope is that you will learn as much about both the candidates as you can and make an informed decision when you vote.

This back and forth is constuctive since people can get an idea of who to vote for; however it is limited in its reach and only for Grove people. Is there someplace on the net where voters can ask either candidate questions. I know I have asked both Mr. Regalado and Mr. Sanchez questions, but neither chooses to reply. I think it is illegal to reply from the city's email system, but why don't they reply from their campaign email systems? I don't know what Tomas' email is, but Joe's is: joesanchez2009@aol.com.

Grape has been nice enough to allow this debate to go on, but since this is such an important election is there not one central place where people can concregate via the web to become informed. Not all votes have either the money or the ways and means to attend in person. Harry and Michelle..do you know of any site or could one of you faciliate a gathering on the net. Thank you.

For all who follow Harry's logic of Mr. Regalado being good for the Grove, might I recall the reason we didn't wanted to have Home Depot in the Grove because of the mess (actually and figurative) it made in other neighborhoods and particular the Calle Ocho store, which happen to be in Mr. Regalado's district, he voted agains one in the grove but could not get his own yard cleaned up in the first place, maybe he had other motives to vote as why he voted. Further I have my doubt about Mr. Regalado being the right one? ... he has blasted on Spanish radio things against anything from our now president to our local commisioner. He might just do not want to vote with what makes sense for the city and not necessarily Grove sense. I like Marc Sarnoff but his 3 am law is discriminatory and when put to the challenge I can see the courts to strike him down too, so what does Harry's list mean?

June 23, 2009 1:08 PM

Olav:

You are correct. Commissioner Regalado certainly does have a different slant on issues when he speaks in Spanish on his radio show. I have listened a few times, but not often, but he is a different speaker on issues when he speaks in Spanish, in fact at one time he told his listeners that he was behind the Stadium Deal, but I can't fault him for that..it's politics. The interesting thing in your post was his negative remarks about our Commissioner Sarnoff. Politics make strange bed-fellows. I also want the 3AM law changed.

Olav, first I would like to say I love your place.
However you are wrong, The Home Depot on 8th opened up 15 years ago. BEFORE Regalado.
And he has been a critic ever since, you can ask people in Shell who have seen him in there ever since.
Again, you are are wrong on him blasting Obama on the radio, he has a news show not a talk show (confusing him with his deceased wife)
And his TV show is all international news.
Your probably going to vote for Sanchez because your friends with Michelle. The list means that when things were voted on, some things Regalado voted no against specifically stating that he believed it to be against what the residents wanted and illegal, the residents filed a law suit against the city and won.
Thats what the list means.

Last year didn't Regalado vote for the 2008/2009 budget thereby raising our taxes and Sanchez voted no? Wasn't the vot 4-1 with Sanchez taking the side of the taxpayers?

June 23, 2009 2:59 PM

Regalado voted (as very Commissioner does) on the budget. He voted no on the garbage fee which would raise your taxes and voted yes on keeping the millage the same which then gave us 25 new police officers. That is what Sanchez voted no on.

June 23, 2009 4:32 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Commissioner Regalado voted YES on raising the millage, not keeping it the same. The vote was 5-0

Sanchez voted NO on the 2008-2009 budget. Regalado vote YES. The vote was 4-0. The raise in the garbage fee was in that vote.

Regalado voted against the Marlins $2 bil Bailout. Joe Sanchez was the Marlins biggest cheerleader. Sanchez was in a hurry to give the taxpayers money to the Marlins. Everyone saw Sanchez throw a hissy fit when Sarnoff made suggestions that would have protected the taxpayers.

(Anyone want to bet Sanchez takes a "job" from the Marlins after the election?)

Sanchez has been taking people to the Marlins stadium as his guests! This is ridiculous that has to be illegal.
Im not talking about 10 people hundreds (at a time!) I have been to a least two Marlins game were I saw hime with a couple hundred of people! I heard they pick them up and all the tickets are complimentary.

Let's face it- Joe Sanchez only started showing up in the Grove when he threw his hat in the ring and Michele N. grabbed that ring and pulled him around to all the Grove events. He never cared about the Grove before then. His voting record proves it.

And for this we get Michelle's response about how he wanted to "reduce the size"
