Commodore Plaza Saturday night party

Still in the works is an all night out thing on Commodore Plaza.

The plan is to have Commodore Plaza closed each Saturday night starting June 20, for a two month period. The times being played with are 5 pm to 3 am. But that is still in the works.

The businesses on Commodore will then do whatever they would like in the way of food, music and entertainment. As the time gets closer, I'll give more details as they are firmed up.

The problem I see is they will take the parking away from street all day on Saturday .Cars will not have access all day Saturday which is the most active shopping day for most merchants on the street and that will hurt the merchants....

I think the summer months are the worst possible time to test this; merchants and restaurants are having a hard time as it is and now with all the rain. Instead of taking parking away, give us more parking at more reasonable rates. I hope someone is checking with the restaurant owners to get their input.

Why close a public street when Peacock Park is right there?

Why not, it is great to think out of the box. Every weekend they close Espanola Way on South Beach and if the same thing is done in the same tasteful manner with artist involved in decorating a nice entrance, and by bringing in street vendors, artists and musicians, perhaps we can at last draw some serious crowds, seeking to relax, dine, drink, people watch and spend.

One thing I have been wondering is whether it would be possible to put an electronic sign or jumbotron display at US1 and Grand Avenue to display events and happenings in the Grove shopping district. What better way are people going to get notified about such events? Perhaps the BID should control the content of the display.

I think this is a great idea to highlight the restaurants and businesses on Commodore, provided they will participate. The key will be proper advertising and promotion. It is not enough to just plan it and post it on the grapevine. Something must be done to get the word out.

Great idea. Shutting streets down for a block party or special event vibe, really sets the tone and people do come out for it. And yes, summer is the right time to test such things, because the risk is minimal and we need stimulus for our neighborhood businesses.

Love the idea! Add some local bands like "18 Wheeler" or "Live Bait" and it should be a great time!
