This is why the taxis need to be dealt with
Here are a couple of photos of the accident we talked about between Michelle Niemeyer's car on and the backward speeding taxi on Virginia Street. The taxi was going so fast, backwards, that it broke the lock plate out of the frame of her car.
The taxis treat Virginia Street from Oak to Grand as their own little parking lot, where they feel they can do what they want -- park anywhere, park anyway, speed and call people names when they ask them to move out of metered parking spots so that paying customers can use them. I think it's about time to get rid of the taxi's on Virginia and I think the Mayfair needs to get involved, since they are the reason the taxis are there.

Between the cabs doubleparking on the street and talking to each other and delivery trucks like the one in the photo parked sometimes two at a time to make deliveries, Virginia St. becomes a one way street. Why is the Mayfair the only hotel that has two cabs - send them to the Ritz. Send them to the other side of the Mayfair on Mary St.
That was a pretty scary accident that Michele was in with the Mayfair Taxi cab. I am glad she is OK. I am pleased that her car was able to protect her from a really bad injury. They say that there is always a silver lining to any cloud and that something good can come out of a tragedy. Perhaps this incident will be the motivation for resolving the Grove Taxi problems. It is too bad that an accident has to be the driving force (no pun intended) to improve the Grove. But this dangerous taxi situation has been going on far too long and should have been resolved before now. It is a shame that with all of the Grove organizations, committees and meetings that are in abundance we have not addressed this dangerous situation and resolved a long time ago. You have reluctantly brought this dangerous taxi situation to all of our attentions and I am confident that a much safer taxi situation will be the result. So thank you Michele for taking one for our Grove Team.

Thank you for posting these pictures, I am upset with the taxi drivers behavior in general and with this driver in particular. He has been seen on Virginia Street many times doing what ever he wants to do and now with his antics he has hurt someone. It was an acident waiting to happen. What if he had hid a pedestrian, some children or an eldry couple who can not move that fast?? What if it was a person of your family? He has a profesional public transportation license?!! What a farce, going 30 + mph in reverse for over a block, for what?? I have more chance of getting a parking ticket than that someone will take responsibility for enforcing trafic rules and law, because that is easier.
in addition to all the aforementioned reasons, the taxi drivers also slow down regular traffic down Grand Ave and Virginia by driving ridiculously slow while fishing for customers. I have often been stuck behind one going about 5 mph until he turned down Matilda to go around and do the whole thing all over again.
The taxi drivers are a protected class in Miami. Do you ever wonder why the metrorail system does not take you all the way to Miami International or we yet have a rail system that takes you to South Beach? It is the taxi union. The same politicians that rant and rave about saving the environment through public transit are the same ones that will do anything to garner votes from these clowns. This is not unique to Miami, this crap goes on in every major city in America (albeit other unions may fall under the special status elsewhere). Even at the federal level, does one ever stop and wonder why the UAW ended up with a huge stake in Chrysler. (Mr. Obama and the union vote?)
This community was all about "change", but this is the reality of our system up and close.
Kind of looks like a don't drink while driving with the Budweiser Delivery Truck as a sponsor
I hope handling a cellular phone while driving will be banned in Miami soon. Big distraction and huge danger for everyone
Right, these people who have their phones and blackberrys as an appendage to their hand are addicts. It is like the world will come to the end if they don't answer every call or email as soon as it comes in. Plus it is downright rude at dinner, at meetings, and at social events. You are not that important and neither is that call.
As far as I know, no cell phone was involved. Not mine, anyway. We think the cab was rushing backwards to the Mayfair to beat the other cabs on the block to a fare. He hit me full speed ahead. It was clear he didn't even see me.
Hey, last two commenters, try to focus and stay on topic. Also, every single cop I have passed in Miami in the last week (at least a dozen) have been on their cell phones (no, not radios, cell phones), so who would enforce such a law?
Does anyone know if this taxi driver was cited for reckless driving? if not, can we get the name of the officer on scene and have him put out on front street to explain why he didn't cite this guy? thanks.
ps. wouldn't a charge of reckless cause immediate revocation of a commercial license?
I agree that they need to clean there act up a bit. But if you kick them off virginia, where will they go? As a grove resident, I like having a place where there is always a cab waiting for me.
