The empty police car seems to be doing the trick
This empty police car has been on the corner of Mary and Grand for over a week now. I guess it's doing the job because people come to a complete stop now. Not out of fear of getting a ticket, but out of total confusion. They can't see if there is an officer inside, so they don't know it the car is trying to turn right left or what.

actually it flashes "watch for pedestrians" early in the morning. I am glad to see it because it seems to get the attention of all the people on the damn phone.
the illusion has lost its efficacy. I cross that intersection maybe four times a day, and at first - yeah man, it was great. But now, it's back to the same moronic blowing through the stop signs, which, on several occasions has almost resulted in the death of my dogs. the last time it happened, i was crossing grand looking to throw away a bag of dog poo in the can on the southeast corner there where mary meets grand, and some twit almost whacked one of my hounds with his fancy little black mercedes convertible. without thinking, in what was a futile gesture, I threw the bag of canine waste at the poser as he sped on down towards cocowalk, wearing his hideously over sized D&G sunglasses, bad music blaring, chatting away on his cellphone.
Actually you're right. This morning a kid went through so fast on the turn that he almost hit a lady.
Even the Grove is pasture for the oh-so-abundant Miami Douchebag...
This did work great at the beginning but they need to ticket. I have almost got hit in that intersection tons of times. And if you say something to the drivers they go nuts. Pedestrians do not have the right of way in South Florida. Why would we walkers and runners think we could be safe in a cross walk. Even if you are pushing a stroller they do not care.
But special thanks to Officer Guell and Commander Martin for putting the decoy car there after they recieved complaints!
Pedestrians beware... the same thing happens at the corner of Mary and Tigertail. I dont know how many times I have been almost been ran over by a car trying to cross that intersection on foot. And another dangerous corner is the one on 27th and Tigertail, there is a crosswalk button, but no signal.... go figure...
They need to put a dummy cop in the car... and I mean a fake one, not a live one and after a few days move the car into a different position. I think this works great and 24hrs. Not only for stop signs but for detering crime in the area.
I am waiting for a law to stop people from texting while driving. Those people should have their blackberries surgically removed from their hand and their licenses taken away PERMANENTLY. Then they will have plenty of time to text from the comfort of their home.
What they need to do is only have the car there as a dummy car 50% of the time. STick a cop in there once in a while, ticket a couple of these toolbags, and wallah. People stop. Have a cop in there 4 hours a day twice a week and the dummy car there the rest of the time. Then it will have an effect. The dummy car trick that never contains an actual cop is old hat and just a waste. Everyone knows whats up.
The police are supposed to protect and serve.
Ticketing is not the best way to accomplish those missions.
Ticketing is not supposed to be a revenue stream for a mismanaged city budget.
There is no need to promote “bad will” with residence and especially tourists that we depend so much and wish to encourage them to return.
There are several ways to slow down traffic without ticketing:
1. Turn on the flashing crosswalk light on Bayshore Drive near Fresh Market (they work well in helping to get folks across the streetand in school zones).
2. Place some orange hazard traffic cones in the street (they work well on Crandon Blvd when the city has a bike or running event).
3. Build some soft rolling speed bumps (they work well on Key Biscayne).
More police ticketing for speeding, expired parking and jay-walking are not the best solutions for helping Coconut Grove improve our quality of life and increase commerce.

Have you ever crossed the street on Bayshore in the crosswalk by Fresh market with the lights flashing? Try it! They still do not stop! Even with a baby in a stroller, lights flashing they do not stop.
Ticketing IS the best way to protect and serve the public from folks that blatantly disregard our traffic laws. Besides, what good is having a stop sign law in the first place if there's not going to be enforcement?
