"We want people to know we are everything!"

Thousands of tour operators and travel agents are coming to Miami for their annual "Pow Wow" event next month. On Monday night, May 18, from 6 to 10 pm, they will be visiting Coconut Grove.

Now is the time to sell the Grove to them. They are the ones who send their clients to various travel destinations. They can easily send them to the Grove on their next trips, as side trips when their clients visit Miami or Ft. Lauderdale.

Literally open your doors, like you see in Key West. Have the doors open all night so people feel free to enter. Have greeters at your doors. Put some plants next to the doors. Let them all know they are welcome.

Coupon books and possibly American Express cards will be given to the visitors totaling $40,000. This will be spent in the Grove on that Monday night. Do you want part of it at your business? Then get the people to enter your establishment. Do something to make them want to visit you and spend money with you.

One theme that is being played out is "Swim by Moonlight," at Cabana One and the Sonesta. Think of what this conjures up in the heads of northern travel agents. Expound on that. Do you sell beach towels? Do you have special drinks? Do you have new art -- share it. Lure the visitors into your place of business.

Now is the time for everyone to get involved. Residents are being sought as ambassadors. Eighty or more will be needed to show people around and point things out. If you would like to volunteer, please email me, I'll get it to the committee.

"One night -- four hours -- will affect us for at least five years," said Dave Collins, head of the BID. Those four hours will make or break the Grove as a tourist destination.

"We want people to know we are everything! We're the best!" said Felice Dubin, co-chair of the Merchants Group and co-owner of the Bookstore.
