The Literati came out to play

poetry
I counted over 70 poetry lovers in the Bookstore last night for poetry night. There were over 150 people, maybe 200, in the Bookstore itself. Nice crowd for a Friday night.

Across the way the Sandbar and Barracuda were catering to their happy hour crowds and the restaurants up and down the streets were serving dinner. I love what the Grove is becoming. There is something for everyone.

Back at the Bookstore, the staff fussed over the cerebral crowd, serving coffee, pastries, sandwiches and culture. Michael Malone, an FIU professor, hosted poetry night, celebrating Poetry Month. He started with a poem from Langston Hughes and then the audience came up one by one and read their favorite poem or their own original work. It started at 7 and ended three hours later. There were that many people reading poetry!

I walked around the Grove for about four hours last night and I was impressed. Someone or some group must be doing something right in spite of the economy. And I do believe there were several entertainers who probably wondered in without permitting and they too help entertain the crowd. I think the powers that be should consider allowing free lancers into the mix at least on a trial basis to see what effect it would have on the Grove.

Right on Jobie- - what could it HURT to at least TRY to allow some randown street performances(?) - nothing wrong with having a juggling fire-breathing unicyclist or two. Tourists will love it and tell their friends back home what FUN it is to visit Coconut Grove.

I tell you - the past couple months I've noticed a definite increase in vitality around the Grove business district. I love cooking at home regularly but am doing less an less of that in favor of walking a few blocks and being filled with a sense of love for my neighborhood. It hasn't felt that way in a long time. People are nicer again and say "hi" as you pass on the sidewalk.

Something for everybody indeed Grape. The less we become a one-trick pony like SOBE, the better. Great restaurants, bars, entertainment, parks, boating, arts, shopping - you'd think we were MUCH LARGER than the little village we are on the map.
