Let's show our red, white and blue

bunting

Many people want to turn the Grove into Mayberry for July 4th -- an old hometown place to enjoy an All American holiday. I agree, but I am more partial to Stars Hollow from the Gilmore Girls. But either way, this is a great concept.

All businesses are being asked to participate in the way of decorations. In fact, AnnaMaria brought up the idea of a contest for storefront window decorations and perhaps even for residents.

It's nice to see the businesses and Center Grove decorated, but how about all the neighborhoods? Why not see red, white and blue all over the Grove, so as people drive through, they can see we are all involved. Houses and condos can easily be decorated and add to the theme of Mayberry/Stars Hollow on the Fourth of July.

Bunting and flags are left over from last year and more will be added. We will kick around the idea of contests for store windows and houses/condos and maybe even boats and will get back with what is decided.

For the small town flavor, involve the kids. Have a contest for them. Maybe a window decoration contest.

Secondly, you need a parade. It doesn't have to be big, but you need a brass band and lots of flags.

Grape Remember last year our neighborhood had a kids & adult bike parade and all the bike were patriotically decorated. We have already started to plan for the same (you published the photos)Following in Key Biscaynes's foot step is also great kids love a parade. As well fireworks, but not so late small kids cannot usually stay up as late as most fireworks are.
Thanks

Great gung-ho comments, but I can't help but notice whenever there's an American patriotic, historic day, hardly anyone ever puts out an American flag in Coconut Grove. For example, other than my own flag flying from my gate in South Grove this past President's Day, I saw no one put any flags out. Sure, July 4th is a cause celebre - but there are other days we should show a bit more patriotism - Memorial Day comes before July 4th and we should start there.

A few years ago, for July 4, a realty company (really can't recall which one or if it was more than one) used to drop off small American flags on everyone's lawn in front of their homes in both the Grove and the Gables. That was a great sight, walking or driving down the street seeing small flags everywhere. Too bad no one does that anymore!

I am not sure he initiated it, but for many years, my husband Santiago Villegas, a realtor, would distribute flags on July 4. Most recently, he helped the Chamber get them for July 4. Best of all, they come from Goodwill Industries. That is their other business. Making flags, bunting and banners. So it is also contributing to a good cause.

I don't get the message, "let's bring America back to Miami."
Miami is in a very unique position, as it happens to be in the continent of North America, at the very southern tip, which makes it the prime gateway to and from Central America and South America.

Can't get more "American" than that.

Unless, of course, you brought Pan American back to life. After all, Miami was its original home.

None of will believe this, but more than a half dozen people who have flown the U.S. Flag, over a period of say, the last ten years in Miami have received citations, "IF" a neighbor complains. About six months ago in Ireland a national law went into effect stating no one could fly any flag, display colorful buns, etc without government approval.
