I was there yesterday when the first branch came down. Very scary, by the sound it made we thought the whole tree was about to fall. Hopefully this is cut down today!
Trim it as needed. Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.
The yellow police tape, does make the area look like a crime scene. I guess the real crime is that the City of Miami does not take better care of our trees by keeping them healthy and watered especially in times of draught like these. Our city needs to do much better maintenance of our parks, pools and recreation areas. It’s a lot less expensive to maintain a park then it is to replant it or to let it lose its foliage and much desired shade. If they don’t have the funds for maintenance then there is little reason to build them in the first place. Let’s figure out a better way to build and maintain our parks, save our precious trees and plant even more. Harry Emilio Gottlieb
the park is in front of Sarnoffs place so at least we know it'll be taken care of immediately.
i assume this is because of the ficus whitefly problem..... i think this is widespread in the grove. look at the tree at the corner of Main and Douglas. it's going to be a problem.
Yeah, Ficus whitefly fo' sure. It's everywhere and there's not much you can do to stop it. The city should whack 'em all and plant some nice sturdy natives - Oaks, Paradise trees, native ficus, etc. Hopefully this won't take forever to resolve since this is such a popular place and those ficus benjamina things are hurricane bait anyway. I was actually wondering if all the "fertilizer" deposited on that side of the park would help those trees fend off the bugs!
That particular tree was probably the ONLY one to stand up to Katrina AND Wilma back in '05. Even the huge banyan on the north/Virginia side of the park toppled.
The good news is that nearly all the trees in that park were saved by simply being propped back up with 2x4's and are pretty healty today.
I want to look at it closer when I get home tonight but I wonder if it's just 'out of balance' from being cut away from the overhead lines over the years. Tough to tell from the angle of this photo.
I really hope they don't start haphazardly cutting on that tree. Miami's alternative to having nice shade trees is those friggin ridiculous blue-tarp and steel structures. SAD SAD SAD. Just look next door at the kiddie park on the Allamanda side to see how horrible that looks. It's pathetic that the city decided to put that 'thing' up instead of replanting some of the trees broken in the storms.
Park is still closed. Word on the street is that they won't pay overtime to the workers because of "budget constraints" and it could take until Tuesday or even Weds til they get the park opened up again. What a shame on such a beautiful weekend.
The City can't take care of the parks they have so for them to want to take down the Expo Center for more park space that they can't even afford to irrigate is ridiculous. Leave the Expo Center and keep Burn Notice for as long as they want to be here - they bring money and excitement to the Grove.
