Mayoral candidate Tomás Regalado to speak to neighbors

City of Miami Commissioner Tomás Regalado will be addressing neighbors of the Coconut Grove Park Homeowners Association (CGPHA) on Wednesday, April 8, beginning at 7:00 pm at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club (2990 S. Bayshore Drive).

Commissioner Regalado is no stranger to issues affecting the Grove, including the promotion of “green” development and publicly opposing the opening of the Home Depot in the Grove, the Mercy condo project and the Grove Harbour Marina office building. He recently voted against using taxpayer's money to bail out of the Florida Marlins.

Everyone is welcome.

The City needs Regalado. Thank you for reminding the Grove that he has stood up for us.

We will not forget how he supported the Grove through the Home Depot issue. He knew the disaster HD was in his neighborhood and he prevented that from happening to us.

Home Dopot has been a really sweet neighbor to Coconut Grove. Open 7 days, late hours, with plenty of lights to keep the bad people from hanging out in the parking lot. With Hurricane season around the corner, I for one feel alot better with them nearby.

Tomas Regalado is a great guy and shall make a great Mayor for Miami. His NO votes against the 3 Amigos and Manny Diaz have been proven time and again to be the correct votes for our city, when the cases reached the courts. Tomas was correct to be against the rezoning of Mercy Hospital, the Fire Fee, the claim that the Miami River is dead and permitting Home Depot to enter Coconut Grove. I plan to do all I can to get Regalado elected Mayor. If you wish to help elect Regalado, then please feel free to contact me.

A lot of people here comment on how great the home depot is, its very nice. However it was going to be the entire lot Milams included, EVERYTHING.
Ever been to the Home Depot on 8th street knows the mess that it is and leaves. The campaign "dont box me in" spearheaded this. And thus why we have a smaller Home Depot, not Sanchez!
I remember hearing Regalado speak around the time, he said a few different things in the speech but he closed simply. "The people of the Grove do not want the Home Depot, just because I am not the district Commissioner does not mean that I cannot represent them."

THe only reason Miliams is still here and will soon finally expand into the two soon to be empty stores is because Home Depot was able to open up. The management at Miliams were all for HD to open up, so that they could survive and expand. All Happy in that shopping center, now we should all try to support them with our business so they both stay here!!

That chump Jose Sanchez was on TV tonight. He was at the County lurking in the back row trying to get seen by the TV cameras as he and the other Latin Builder goons gloated over the Marlins Bailout.
He looked like a bouncer.

Does Sanchez represent the taxpayers or does he represent out of town types here to rape the locals?

Let me get this straight. We are in a recession. People are losing their homes. Schools don't have enough money to operate. Unemployment is at an all time high. And what is our overpriced local supermarket doing? They're remodeling. I guess if you have the money you can support that. I can't. I have to feed my family on a budget.

Anon 6:13,
Yeah, we can't afford to have private businesses make decisions that might create construction and additional in-store jobs.

Two quick things: First, most of what I know about Regaldo, I like, and he at least comes off as genuinely thoughtful and concerned. However, I disagree with his position on a handful of issues, and the above quoted statement "The people of the Grove do not want the Home Depot, just because I am not the district Commissioner does not mean that I cannot represent them." is untrue at best. What would have been more accurate would have been to say "a very vocal and wealthy minority of grove residents don't want home depot, but far more people want it or don't care."

Just stating the facts, so we don't get swept away with this idea that we're one unit. Lots of different opinions in the grove, which is why I like it.

I know many people who are not wealthy who did not want Home Depot. You don't have to be rich to appreciate quality of life. And turning the place into a warehouse district was not good for anyone.

And for the person who is glad that Home Depot is there during hurricane season, hope you don't plan on lining up for plywood, they don't sell it and every other item they sell can be purchased eleswhere, including Walgreens.

Slow down. allowing a home depot on the edge of US 1 doesn't make the grove a warehouse district. And there are plenty of us, who did not oppose home depot (wealthy or not). That's all I'm saying.

But for the record, most of the say no to home depot signs were in nicer yards. And I had to remove one from my yard, which I didn't put there, so that was a little annoying.

As far as Walgreens carrying everything they do, you must be kidding.

Home Depot was the right decision. Milam's will become better and stronger as a result. Anyone willing to invest in the Grove, which has seen a better day, is ok with me. Growth is good, even for short sighted people. Economics 101.

Growth is expensive. It means higher taxes, larger infrastructure, larger bureaucracies, higher crime rates, need for more services, more chain stores, poorer education, higher unemployment and homelessness -- what's so great about growth?

If growth were so great, why would people be moving out of cities, into suburbs and small towns across the country?

Regalado has my vote. He votes thoughtfully and without outside interests. He votes for the people he represents - what a novel concept!

Remember Home Depot wanted to take over the entire site making it an industrial park and taking away the grocey store before the Grove got involved. We are happy with Shell Lumber and their involvement in the community. We never needed Home Depot but Winton and Diaz thought we did. They just forgot they were supposed to represent the people who voted for them. Are you listening Joe?

To SAILFAST above who thinks Home Depot is "sweet." You actually said "sweet" to describe a home improvement center. You can thank the people at the Grove First who keep a close watch on the property, their code violations as to lights, noise, illegal parking, oversized signs, and do everything they can to not allow it to turn into a SW 8th St. disaster.
