Grove is ready to participate in Earth Hour events

The World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour, held March 28 this year, will have the Grove going dark from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. Actually over 240 cities will be going dark in an effort to bring attention to climate change.

Participating businesses will go to candlelight for the hour (kitchens, street lights and other safety lighting will remain on); promotions such as Earth Happy Hour are being pushed. Stores may want to offer "Black Out Sales”, "unplugged" musicians can serenade the crowds. Galleries are encouraged to unite in a creating a Gallery Walk, curate environmental pieces, and such.Last year the art had a special glow shown by candlelight.

Chamber Administrative Director Richard Issa and President Lili Dones serve in the Subcommittee including representatives of organizations and media from throughout the city and county.

Now you can get rid of your junk mail right at the Post Office where recycling bins have bin placed throughout the building.

For what it's worth, burning a candle for light dumps far more carbon into the atmosphere than the comparable light output from an electric bulb, even if the bulb is a garden variety incandescent and the source is a fossil fuel power plant. While Earth Hour might be a commendable public awareness effort, the notion that turning out a light bulb and burning a candle is actually helpful only promotes ignorance of the actual science of the stunt.

While all of you hippies are stumbling around in the dark, hoping not to get mugged (and since none of you are armed, I recommend just staying inside), I'll be kickin' back in my hot tub with the thermostat set to 100 degrees, with my garden and pool lights on, smoking a big cigar.

After all, Miami chicks like a guy with a big carbon footprint.

You've got to be kidding. Have you looked at yourself lately? We ladies prefer the moon and the stars as they shimmer on the bay.

Got that covered, dawg. I take the ladies on the occasional full moon cruise on my sailing yacht. I even do the wine and cheese thang.

The girls like it so much they even agree to sail naked. Like taking candy from a baby.

Suckers.

Wow not the thread I expected! I actually like the idea. It sounds quaint and could be a nice monthly event where the Grove switches to candlelight for a couple of hours.

swlip,
Are you the same guy who chest-thumped about having a great job, a lovely wife, a boat and two daughters? And here you're carrying on like some blow-hard frat boy?

say what?

Say, what? I never "chest-thump". You're engaging in what Freud called "projection."

I never joined a frat, either.

Should I call you, "Say what boy?" Or just, "Box boy?"

How about my "bag boy?" I promise to tip.

CLARIFICATION: The idea of switching off the lights is about making a statement in solidarity with all the major capitals of the world to call attention to global warming. It is not an attempt at saving electricity.
