A proper Grove entrance at 27th Avenue was discussed

The entrance to the Grove at 27th Avenue and US1 is seriously being worked on.

Here are a couple of designs for the entrance sign.

Many would love to have the large pillars that Coral Gables has, but there really is not much right of way for that and most of the land is in private hands. Also, the signs cannot obscure site lines of traffic, so that's an issue, too.

The closest place for a large sign is at Berrie's, but that is too far from the actual entrance. The City is working with the NET office on doing the right thing.

I'm sure we can all agree that a nice, first class entrance sign to the Grove is needed.

The large billboard on 27th Avenue and US1 is controlled most of the year by the BID, but that's really not a proper entrance sign, although it does draw attention to us.

There was a approx. 8 x 6 ft sign right on the N E corner It was gray and blue and had the round Coconut Grove insignia on it. It was in bad need of a repaint job, then it disappeared. Supposedly was hit by a car. Both those designs are in keeping with what is happening in other communities, We should have two on each opposing corners of main entrances to our the Grove.
27th is a natural due to the stop light. Also Grand Ave. and US1 then possible around US1 & 17th. because when the Festival happens all the traffic is diverted into the corner from that point. Possible Jobie would use his skill. What he has on Oak and Gifford would be lovely in the interim. I do believe he need only take one of his swail and allow the city to enhance at least one of those gateways.

A nice big-as possible sign would be great there at the 27th Av. entrance, kind of Nature looking, wood/coral/ with a Bayside-Water motif, sailing boats, sea birds, you get the drift.. That's what's unique about the Grove: we have a BAY, for those who forget, not just shops..

While they are at it, why not fix 27th ave, which is an ugly mess for pedestrians, tourists, from US1 to Bayshore?

And we could also have good looking Cocoanut Grove Village signs at other key places, like the Grand Av, and Bird entrances from US1.

I think the word historic should be dropped from the main title -- how about Grovey or just Coconut Grove? Then at the bottom: HISTORIC -- FUN -- SAILING CAPITAL

Anon 11:53,
The re-development of S.W. 27th Avenue has been in the works for years and is presently well along in dealing with issues of public hearings, right-of-way acquisition, utility placement, parking, landscaping and so on.
Also, the Grand Avenue "entrance" to Coconut Grove at U.S. 1 is actually well within the City of Coral Gables. I'm sure the Coral Gables City Commission would welcome your suggestion for an entrance sign to Coconut Grove on their turf.

I agree with ANON 12:14 -
"historic" is cliche. Overtown is dubbed 'historic' on the I-95 sign. Is that neighborhood the same as the Grove?

Why not use a better descriptive word or words that set a desired tone for our visitors?
Sure our history is unique, but what is unique about it?

Also I second the idea for a sign somewhere on the eastbound Bird Road entrance.

Preferably east of the Home Depot ;-)

the Grove is not Coral Gables, and I am grateful its not!! That's the reason I moved here, so I think we should have our own twist, and creative designed, and not something borrowed...

I know the "re-development" of 27th AV. has been "in the works" for years, like many other "projects" in the Grove (Waterfront, Tiger Tail, etc, etc, don't get me started)

How many more years does the City need to fix this mess on 27Ave? 10 more years?

And the Corner of US1 and Grand ave (And Le Jeune) is exactly where the WEST GROVE starts. According to a map I just checked. A sign there saying Coconut grove to the right would be most appropriate. It is Grand Av, is it not?

Try thinking a little bit more and getting your facts straight before making such wise comments.

Can they set up something like a contest of general submission period for designs? I think the graphic designers and fine artists in the Grove would all have some grand ideas for this!

Fix the streets, put up a sign, but keep it cheap and simple. Just like the old sign, someone will hit this one. Have you been on the streets lately. Let's focus on fixing the issues in the grove first though, and not put the cart before the horse.

Whatever design the people of Coconut Grove come up with, I'll produce it out of beautiful, colorful art tiles, a mural, that will withstand all weather conditions, I'll install it to hold against 150 MPH wind and I'll do it for free. Now what?

Mr. Steppe,

I use to live in the Grove and I enjoy reading this blog and I'm in a position of authority to place four (4) such entrance murals leading into our small community on the East coast of Florida. Your offer is very generous, but we would be willing to pay a reasonable fee, however, you phone number is incomplete and you never answer you cell. Please complete your phone number or try to place an e-main on this blog.
