Let's have some big art in public places
I was in Sarasota over the weekend and they brought that famous "Kiss" image back. It's a huge sculpture of the famous Time Square photograph.
Sarasota has so much art in public places that you can't help but see and enjoy it. Everywhere you go, there is some sort of art in your face.
We have the bull at Mayfair and the giraffe and horse on South Bayshore Drive, but we need more. Incidentally, the bull, giraffe and horse were actually at St. Armand's Circle this weekend at the outdoor arts festival. I guess we'll see the artist and his great works again at the Grove Festival in a couple of weeks.
Art along South Bayshore Drive would be a great attraction for the Grove. Kennedy Park had some rust-type sculptures a few years back. They added some interest to the area whether you liked them or not.

Grape, were you really in Sarasota, I mean how can you cofer the Grove so adequately and have time to visit Sarasota for two days? In any event, don't you feel/think it is difficult for the average Joe to get their art in front of the people, specifically in the Grove area?
If the "average joe" is a real artist there is the Art Stroll every month, the Mad Hatter, the Banyan Fesvital, the Grove Arts Festival, the St. Stephan's arts and crafts fair, there was a paint out and an En Plein Air event last year and every gallery in the Grove is looking for aritsts. That's how they make their money, promoting artists and selling their work.
Also, a few restaurants in the Grove have art for sale on their walls.
Also, art on the streets each weekend will be starting soon. And I am sure I am leaving many things out.
Real artists have dozens of outlets in the Grove. Dozens.
As for resellers of premade things, there is no market for that except retail stores.
PS. I am out of town often, sometimes for a week at a time. But the Grapevine goes on. Magic.
This is an idea that I can really get behind, but there are a few big questions: who commissions these projects? Who chooses the artists? Who censors the art? (there will be a long line of blowhards fighting for that right)etc?
How do we get it done, without it becoming a bureaucratic nightmare, that leaves us with something boring or ugly?
Well you have to think community, then buy local and hand made. That would narrow it down to the talent that abounds Coconut Grove.
It's about time we recognize our own. Like the
2009 Coconut Grove Calendar. Kudos to them Now that was a WOW piece.
Grape, Please be clear on this.
The art sitting in my yard is not premade and most definitely not mass produced. The family business that produces my art tiles have been in business as a family for about 2,000 years in China. Each piece, every single piece is hand painted by one person and is a proud tradition, going back and forth into kilns @ 1850 degrees, back and forth for a period of 7 days. These tiles are not premade mass produced junk. These tiles have been commissioned by me and are genuine works of art from China, not because I say so, because they are quality works of art. Hold one, examine one, look at the quality, I have colored sand melted onto the surface for extreme color affect. Please don't be so quick to judge. Come over and hold one. I'll give you the address of the people who produces this art, do the research. I'm not jockeying for a sales pitch here, just get the facts straight-----okay?
To That Guy. It's a federal precedent ruling. An artist, anywhere in the United States has the legal right under the 1st Amendment to sell his art on any sidewalk or park or public place and doesn't have to ask permission or fill out any forms or permits. The fact is I'm doing this all over the Grove and noone is noticing. The police know this is a federal ruling and don't get involved. Two other men are also doing this on Grand Avenue between 32'd 37th avenue's and making a living wage. There's plenty of room for several dozen artist and the added activity around the Grove will attract tourist and locals into the Grove to spend a little money.
