I get some really stupid and ignorant comments here

I got this stupid comment, below in blue, from an ignorant person who really doesn't have a clue what a blog is.

They don't realize the the whole definition of a blog is that it is the point of view of the person writing the blog and it is not just facts on a page, like your daily newspaper should be but to be done right, it should consist of my opinions. The whole thing should consist of my opinions.

I doubt the readership would be so high here if I just posted the news in a dry manner, case in point is the daily decline of readership of every newspaper and news program on tv.

This blog has morphed into the daily news of the Grove, simply because we don't have a daily newspaper and 99% of the items you read here would not come to light if I didn't blog them. But to be true to blogging, I should have my opinion inserted in each blog post, otherwise this would be the daily newspaper.

So if you want to tear me down for doing my job as a blogger, fine. But have the courtesy and balls to sign your name and not hide like a wimp behind your ignorant vitriol. I don't hide things here as fact as stated below. I state the facts and then comment on them.

As for getting both sides of the story, I do this blog as a community service, I actually work 12 hours a day at my business and am the condo prez and on various boards, etc. I don't have all day to get out and get the story, and honestly, the comments section is there for anyone who was wronged to correct the wrongs. The only comments I don't publish are libelous and only by anonymous commenters who don't deserve their libelous comments printed since they hide behind their words. Sort of the like the coward below. I doubt the person commenting below gets off their ass and does a thing for the community or they would not be so nasty and ignorant in their views.

If the ignoramus below knew what I do for this community (behind the scenes on a daily basis) they would probably keep their stupid, ignorant comments to themselves.

Here is what the ignorant fool sent in:

"Anybody who thinks the grape is some kind of professional journalist who gets both sides of a story has really not been reading for long. He once specifically defended his "spin" on a meeting by saying it was his "duty" as a blogger to insert his opinion (even though it was disguised as a factual report)."

How about we all start signing our comments and be menches? Why hide behind your comments if you believe in them? I may start requiring that. Only 1% of readers leave comments and if they leave because of that, well, I still have the other 99% who read, absorb and move on without having a hissy fit at every sentence I post.

Firstly, the Grape has attacked me relentlessly; Jobie Steppe here. The Grape said my art is cheap junk from Tiwan and he printed my response. People advisied the Grape, do not print stuff from Jobie Steppe, yet he did. "EVERYONE IN THE GROVE" knows to keep a wide birth from me. The Coconut Grove Grape Vine still allowed me to make my comments. At times I did not like him, yet he still presently my comments-----when he felt they were in the spirit of what he wanted the Grape to be. I, Jobie Steppe completely support the Grape because I know he does not kiss ass and is a friend of everyone in, around and about what is best for Coconut Grove, Florida, U.S.A. Anyone who attacks the Grape, attacks Jobie Steppe as this man is fair-----period!. P.S. This man is gentle, yet firm so come and talk with me about the Grape. 305-447-6526. 3270 Gifford Lane, Coconut Grove, FL 33133----Print it Grape!!!!!! print it.

Anonymous gives the little guy a place to comment. I know it is hard for a tall white male to understand why a person of a different gender or race or height or all three things combined makes for a different experience. Unless you have been discriminated against because of these things, you cannot understand why people like to post anonymously. We can state our opinion and not be accosted on the streets. Say, for instance, one should disagree with someone, say, Tony Scornavacca, would you like to be the short, black female that he sees on the street and wants to have a "talk"? Anonymity levels the playing field.
I'm sorry that people use "Anonymous" to hide behind for their attacks on you. You must understand that these people have issues that have nothing to do with you. I see these people all the time on this blog. I appreciate that I can find out what's going on downtown. I also appreciate that when I disagree strongly with comments made through this blog, I can express my view without being abused verbally on the street. I have come to understand that this is a commercial blog that comes from a tall white male whose main concern is for the businesses of the Grove. Sometimes I wish that I could start a blog about the average Grove resident that lives in a house, has kids, pays the high taxes, tries to survive, and really doesn't care whether a business opens or closes or whatever because these businesses don't care about the average Coconut Grove resident. You are good at what you do. You can't be everything for everyone. You help with tourism. You are a great place for locals and tourists alike to find out what's going on. If someone thinks they can do it better, then they can start their own blog.

I write about the businesses and things like that because they call me or send me the news. They invite me to openings and closings, I am at committee meetings and council meetings.

If the residents want to be represented here, speak up, email me, contact me. Most of the things going on in the residents are basically private. I don't think you wanting me snooping around your block looking for news.

You need to send me the news. Having a garage sale for charity? Send it? Having a block party? Send me the news. Keep me in the loop on the residential streets. Having garbabe pick up problems? Tell me. Having rude police visits? Let's hear it.

Anom 8:13----Right on and equal to Jobie above and I know cause I'm Jobie. The Grape gives us a venue to be anom or sign our names. Such an experience is called "in the spirit of philosophy" and dates back over 2,000 to 4,000 thousand years B.C.. The Grape is what makes democarcy to date a force. Us Groveites should harness this Grape and the Grape to preserve our community.

Grape, not to worry! We're all behind your efforts and energy and I sure when I state WE LOVE YOU!

I like to hear your opinions, even if I don't always agree with you, and that's what a blog should be! Keep it up!

I've always wondered why you allow Anonymous posters. If someone doesn't even feel their opinion is worth standing behind, why should anyone else?

Such hyperbole! If a comment is critical, it consitutes "vitriol"; it is "nasty"; and the commenter must be "ignorant" x3. WOW! And you wonder why people prefer not to give their name???

Dude, the way I see it you are exactly like a "traditional" journalist. Take the New York Times for example, a typical reporter will take the news of the day mix in his/her/transgendered editorial opinion in the hope people find it objective.

Of course, I believe this is why today a common stock share of the NYT is less than a copy of their actual daily paper.

At least here you are not living off some vaunted reputation, your reader knows what he/she/tg is getting and it is free!

I agree with all the anonymous postings, why get harassed for speaking how you feel...It makes no sense, and I appreciate you Grape for allowing this, and I hope that you keep it this way!

Posting anonymously is cowardice; posting pseudonymously protects your identity, and allows others in the discussion to direct their responses to specific parties.

If you're unwilling to adopt a pen name for the sake of dialogue, it is doubtful you have anything of value to say.

I'd just like to say to Cpayan - how is that handle not anonymous? How are my posts, even with a "name" attached not anonymous. I do not use my real full name on here, just as all but 2 posters do. I'm sure others reasons are similar - we have a job, employer, position in the world which could be affected or could bring some repercussion for putting our opinions and ideas out there.

Just food for thought grape. Do you only want you and Jobie posting? Because no one else is anything but anonymous.

I actually think that the reason newspaper readership is declining is because they hide behind the pretense of objectivity, but nobody really believes that they are objective, and people have started to figure out that most journalists don't have any specialized knowledge of the matters that they report on.

Which is precisely why a local blogger who knows the scene and wears his biases on his sleeve is rather refreshing. Even though I frequently disagree with Grape, I consider the Grapevine blog to among my necessary daily reads.

swilp you are irrelevant, and it's because of people like you that I remain anon, because you walk around and stick up your proud chest all over the Grove, like if you own it. GROW UP!

Newspapers are dying because of technology. A paper is full of yesterday's news. Radio, then television, now the Internet are taking the place of newspapers, and getting the news out sometimes as it is happening.

Aside from that, all the "Anonymous" posters are confusing. Pick a nick, stick with it. I don't know you from Adam's off ox anyway, and if I did, so what? You don't stand behind your words?

Anon 8:13, thank you for your insight. You're right.

I always talk about the anonymous commenters hiding behind their computers, but I guess many people have different reasons for not stating their names.

Point well taken.

Anon 1:47, we all own the Grove, every one of us who lives and works and entertains ourselves here, and if we all took the pride of ownership in the Grove that Grape does we probably would have a lot less to anonymously complain about.

Isn't is all kind of redundant? Basically we all really may be hypothetically anonymous... I mean, isn't it possible to input some name other than your own (i.e. your ex-wife's) and then go on a scathing verbal rampage, then that "poor" mis-represented person would take the wrap?

Just a thought...

We may not be who you think we say we are - even if we say so.

Nobody owns the Grove. Some people would like to think they do, but we all have a stake in it but no one owns it. Some of us work at making it a better place, others just complain.
