It took awhile, but it looks like Commissioner Sarnoff was finally able to get rid of this establishment. We need more politicians like CD2. Let's get behind Commissioner Sarnoff and get him to run for Mayor. As Mayor he will be able to get rid of questionable establishments like 'Christabelle's Quarter'. Take a moment and thank the LORD for bringing Commissioner Sarnoff to our little community. TAKE BACK THE GROVE!

The LORD couldn't possibly have been part of this. He drank wine. And probably stayed out until 5 a.m.

Nothing was wrong with this establishment and Sarnoff is a SLEEZE

Why was Christabelle's a questionable establishment? Maybe because it was different than any restaurant here? Give me a break, and as for Sarnoff he surely is questionable... and "little community" nothing is wrong with a lil diversity around here.

There's a lot of taking back that needs to be done, but CQ was not the problem

C'mon people. The first comment was clearly satirical. Are you the same people that don't "get" the Colbert Report?

You've got one use it.

I do have to say though, that you can't entirely blame Sarnoff for this. John went too big, too lavish, and clearly just spent too much money. If he'd been reasonable and set it up smaller, with maybe only 50 chandeliers, and used regular marble for the stairs rather than the most expensive you can find, and so on, he might have had longer to establish it. You can always expand later, once you've demonstrated that people are into it. Sorry John, if you are reading, don't mean to come down on you, but your eyes just got too big on that one, and ya know, the economy - you can always blame that.

John had the right to do what he wanted because it is a free country, or at least its supposed to be. Geez I am sure he did not want this to fail. John go to the REAL South, like LA, or Georgia or Miss., I am sure your restaurant will be appreciated there, but you would have to lower the prices a little and hire a southern chef because as long as the food is good people will come.... No need for fancy or velvet ropes, its just down to earth people....

From the gossip I hear at our morning breakfast club is that Commissioner Sarnoff wanted to punish John for not supporting him when he ran in both elections. That is why he insisted on the 3:00AM closing and would not support Commissioner Spence-Jones when she tried to get John an exception to the rule. The lesson here is to NOT cross your local commissioner.

One reader calls Commissioner Sarnoff a SLEEZE! I would have to say he is just a damn good politician, i.e LBJ!

Never had a chance to eat there.....I attempted to eat there twice and was rudely turned out a the door....

If John did not want to support him it is his right not to. Most Politicians are sleezy and Sarnoff proves that. Sarnoff is not a king and John or no one else had/has to kiss his a#$.

A good politician? ha what a joke!! I hope you were being sarcastic.

There is no way sarnoff will ever be elected again unless he stuffs the ballot box himself. He has a handful of fools that support him.

we're still 2 years from his exit, so we've got to find a way to deal for now. The rest of the commissioners have realized his bs now, though, so he won't be able to carry the day on his personal agenda any more.

To Anon 3:44, no one said he didn't have the right. Anyone has the right to invest poorly, I was just pointing out some ways in which he could have proceeded more cautiously. The 5am law had no effect on CQ - it would have died regardless based on the bad food (at least at the beginning), bad service and insane cost. I'm just curious to see what's next for that building.

Commissioner Sarnoff is NOT sleezy, but I do question his right hand man Mr. Peter Erhlich. What ever happened to his other right hands, Mr. Wilbur and Mr.Alexander? Talk about sleeze!

yes he is a TOTAL SLEEZE and don't try to make this about other people, but you must work for him I guess..

C'mon Christabelle's owner overspent - plain and simple - definitely a cost overrun on his part, it was a poor design and chefs and a menu that never quite made it. And what about that aquarium - what a waste of money. It was never open til 5am so it wasn't affected by the 5am closings. And John the owner did support Sarnoff - he had fundraisers there for him. Just the facts m'am. Why is George's so successful, the owner is always in, good food, good ambience and a friendly atmosphere.

Well every time I pass George's his snotty customers turn their noses, but anyway....

your not from the South, so you can not appreciate the design, the building is beautiful and goes with the history

I agree with some of your points, but not all

I do not work for him, but I think that Commissioner Sarnoff is a prince among men and will continue to do a great job for the people of his district. I pray that he runs for Mayor so he can do that same great job for ALL citizens of this city. I do think that he does have sleazy folks working for him, but perhaps that is how he has been able to perform as greatly as he has for his district. Draft Marc for Mayor!

CQ is a tough sell. Yes it is lavish. Yes it probably would have never made it. But one thing you can agree on is that everyone shop owner in the Grove has lost money because of the 3am closing. We didn't lose 2 hours of sales. Its just that people stoped coming period and going to other places in miami i.e. brickell, south miami

The place was a class act, never ate there, but breath taking. I think the economy going bad was the major factor, plus people with money who enjoy this nice looking place----I don't think would subject themselves to that kind of parking, on a main street and connected to little touristy shops all around. The Grove needs someone to tie everything together and I have a plan to do just that, but I require a few additional weeks to get it out there. I can at least tell you my plan will be using the MAYFAIR Hotel as it has the correct total environment to support my plan.

This recession will cause many businesses to close. And many people will be laid-off or worse. It is Darwin's Theory that only the strongest survive.

Comm Sarnoff did not cause the recession. He is trying to help Grove businesses.

Now about that taxpayer giveway to the Marlins?

If Sarnoff is trying to help Grove businesses while many of the Grove businesses are failing does that mean that Sarnoff help isn't doing us much good? Or does that mean Sarnoff is incompetent? Or does that mean that Sarnoff has no clue?
Or does that mean that Coconut Grove is a gem stone in the rough and Sarnoff has no idea how to cut the mustard?

Well look at the candidates for mayor - you won't see much of an improvement for awhile -Sanchez will do whatever Manny wants him to do since he is probably going to fund his campaign from mostly out of state contributors like he did with that woman he ran for commissioner and then there is Regalado....can't we do better? How about the blogger above here that says he has a plan.....all you complainers, throw your hat in the ring, run for office.....see how much you can get done working for the City.

The Grove was on its wasy down before the recession because of Sarnoff. He is an elitist and obviously does not care about the little people. I initially liked Sarnoff because I felt he thought about the Grove first but he doesn't. He only cares about his "Vision" for the Grove which is not working for anyone.

I loved the analogy of Coconut Grove being a "gem in the rough". First we had the Grove. It was a beautiful gem. The natural form of the gem gave it it's beauty. Then investors arrived and said "I know how to make this gem better." So they chipped away and they chipped away and now we have the Grove as it is today. An overpriced investors' vision of the gem that was the Grove. Does it look like the original gem? No Does it have the same value of the original gem? No. Does anyone thing that if we had left the original gem alone, or, god forbid, protected it, that the gem would be more valuable today than it was before all these masterminds starting chipping away at it in the name of making it more valuable? Sorry, but I think our "gem" has lost quite a bit of luster because of people that thought that they could improve the gem by chipping away pieces of the things that made it valuable in the first place..

Interesting point last Anon. Some of the places that give the grove it's appeal are a just a little unpolished, like Scotty's, which I prefer to Monty's simply because it's comfortable and real. And the Baracuda, where you can get a great food and have a few beers for under $20.

It's precisely those places, by the way, that Sarnoff and his vission have attacked, not places like CQ, which was over-the-top and made precisely for the rich elitists who sarnoff has openly admitted are the only people he really represents.

Sarnoff critized any place that didn't cater to his tastes: bars, nightclubs, lounges, and especially any place that college students visited. This year alone, the only place that was left standing was Flavour (which is now Temple.) RIP TuTuTangos, Oxygen , Cielo, Apples Martini, Senor Frogs, Nikki Beach, Christabelle's Quarter, Wet Willies......the list goes on and on. Thanks Sarnoff!
