BID will be discussed at this week's Commission meeting

The City Commission meets Thursday at City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive). On the agenda, the Commission will finalize the BID (Business Improvement District) assessment roll and will hear property owners' concerns about the new BID.

When things are finalized a mailing will go out to business owners, announcing the BID board members. There are a few categories:

Property owners: Manny Alonso-Poch, Joe Harrison, Scott Silver and Maurice Wiener
Merchants: H. Bredermeier and Steven Antn Rehage
Restaurant owners: Sylvano Bignon Lalo Durazo and Lee Marks
Hoteliers: Sam Kelley and Barbara Wendel
Three non-voting members include Lilliana Dones, Monty Trainer and David Yoblick.

Why is David Yoblick on this list? He used to be the GM of CocoWalk, but does not live in the Grove, work in the Grove, or have a business here. As I recall, he doesn't even live in the City of Miami. Why should he have a seat at the table? I thought the BIC/BID was supposed to give the Grove a say over its own issues, and control over funds to make our commercial core better.

Michelle,
Had you been paying attention, you might have noticed that Mr. Yoblick remained actively involved in the BID formation process even after he left CocoWalk because he felt strongly about the need for its creation. He worked countless hours meeting with property owners to explain what was being proposed and to answer whatever questions came up. All in all, he is a fine choice for the position, certainly better than anyone from the minority clique of owners and merchants who tried to sabotage the effort every step of the way.
You should also note that he is being tapped for a non-voting slot, which means that his counsel will be freely available but can be heeded or not on a take-it-or-leave-it basis.
