Mangoheads want to form a corporation to run the Strut

The Mangoheads met earlier this week and made plans for the future of the King Mango Strut.

Plans are now in the works to form a corporation to run the next parade. A board of directors will run the corporation. Seven people have stepped up so far and more are needed.

After the board is formed, they will apply for 501(c)(3) status. That will cost about $3000. It will allow the Strut to receive different types of funding and allow donors to deduct their donations from taxes.

About $8600 has been raised this year through t-shirt and poster sales. The Mango Wrap Party is coming up, probably in a few weeks. We'll keep you posted.

Thus turning the Strut into another division of Coconut Grove Inc.

While I understand that forming a corporation and obtaining 501(c)3 status is beneficial to obtaining funding, the idea that Mango Strut is turning into a corporation is the epitome of IRONY in my humble opinion.

I love the Grove and love the strut, but let's not lose the spirit of it!

Its true. The "Friends of King Mango" became a corporation long ago, back it was cool to go corporate! But the main reasons group is going after the 501 thing is because:
1) the number goes well with jeans and,
2) No one on the Mangohead committee can count higher than that.
Love and peace,
King Mango

Not sure about going corp. or even the 501 thing.... But, a board would be cool if it get's more people involved.

The strut is a wonderful event that all in the grove enjoy. And I hope the board brings a bit of a democratic nature to the strut.

The move involved the better!

But, why is such a anti- establishment parody-parade going so "official"?

The reason for going "corporate" is pretty simple. Say some group (governmentn or private) wants to contribute to the Strut. It's a bit tricky to make out the check to "a random bunch of parodists" and a lot easier if it is to a bona fide (tax deductible) entity.

Just more people wanting to take over something good that other people started because they are followers and not very original.

Glenn Terry started the Strut almost 30 years ago and he is the one who incorporated it. Is he stealing the idea from himself? Think before you speak.

Everything is so structured and organized to reap the last possible cent from anyone anywhere.
Forms, forms, endless forms to fill out, rules and regulations and even more paperwork on top of more paperwork and some more rules, forms and paperwork. Going to a hospital and feel poorly, well, fill out these forms first.
I've made a small fortune and never ever filled out one form or asked permission or took advantage of one single person. Fill out your forms fools----ask their permission fools----give them your money fools. I've hated all that paperwork and have refused to participate and life has been full and fruitful and a great joy.
