Keep an eye on the merchandise

The Sunglass Hut on Grand Avenue was robbed. The thieves got in from behind (the old Starbucks) and took lots of expensive glasses.

Another concern are groups of kids roaming the streets at dusk. They are entering stores, wreaking havoc and leaving. When asked to leave, they really get angry.

Some have fake forms and say they are collecting money for their school or sports team but it is not legit.

Can you give more information? We have had the same group coming in for awhile that ask the same question "how old do you have to be to work here" while the others try to steal items. They know we are on to them so they haven't gotten anything in awhile.

I have been meadning to confront those boys. I have seen them from time to time in the bookstore. I knew their whole football team needs money gig is a scam. I have some photos on my laptop from my time in the peace corps in africa and I really want to sit them down and give them a wakeup call about the path they are taking. It makes me sick to see kids in this country who get a free education screw around and waste it all. IF they want to be punks fine, maybe we should deport their butts and let some other people come who would feel lucky to have those same opportunities. I would also like to follow them home and talk to their parents. I did a lot of canvassing for Obama in west grove and now know a lot of families there. Lots of the parents work and the kids are left with very old grandparents or teenagers who clearly are not keeping an eye on them.

the last 2 comments are so ignorant so what if they are black. Just cause you went to Africa does that mean you know what you are talking about. NO, Why don't we have you deported since your so perfect. Yes these kids should be punished if they did wrong, but you are ignorant and they don't want to talk to you. These kids might not even be origins of Africa, did you think of that GENIUS, they might have backgrounds from Great Britain where your grandfather took them from.

See how that sounds, yep ignorant, look in the mirror. That's what's wrong with the world everyone thinks they are better than the next person.

Anon at 7:38 is right. While no one said, "I bet it was the black kids!", it was implied that the kids are from West Grove, a predominantly African American section of the neighborhood. Thats not right and its not the first time this has happened on this blog. The West Grove is every much a part of this community as the other areas. There are plenty of good people there with good kids and good businesses trying to make ends meet. To assume that those who commit crime are from these areas is wrong.

Well - lets use the "process of elimination" to figure out who is doing what. These kids dont come from the rich folks condos. They stopped making babies years ago. They dont get off of the tour bus. They are not from visiting yachts in the harbor. They are not police, security, or the absent information booth employees. They are not waiters, or anyone else who honestly tries to WORK for a living.
AND - they certainly dont DRIVE here, cause you can't park. So - I guess a space ship from Uranus stopped and left them off!
OR - does the shoe fit?

Anon :5:53 here

Blind and 7:38 get over yourself.

First Off I AM half black myself.

Secondly I saw the kids with my own eyes and I have seen them in West Grove so yes I do know. They are trouble makers. They steal tips, harass store owners and take advantage of tourists and others by asking for money for fake sports teams and use the money for god knows what. They are on a path to where unfortunately many black men in west grove have been: prison. That is just a fact. I cannot tell you the number of felons in west grove. My desire to engage these boys is maybe to knock some damn sense into them.

This isn't to say everyone in west grove is a thug. There are a lot of great people in the community and I have made some great friends there. However, it is wrong for the African American community in south Florida in general to continue to ignore the amount of violence and drug use and father's skipping out. Within the community people need to start taking personal responsibility.
Frankly, this is one thing I really think Obama has an ability to do as president because he is in the position to be able to make that argument and start pressuring the African American community to get its act together. We all have to deal with racism/discrimination etc, but that isn't an excuse to engage in the type of violence that is PREVALENT within much of the black population. We can do better.

I also think its my responsibility to help out people in my own community especially the youth. In fact sharing my story is the third goal of service in the peace corps.

1.Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.

2.Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

So yes, next time I have my laptop and they come up to me with a bogus form I will have a talk with them and I will show them some pictures and give them a wakeup call. Maybe it does nothing, but at least I am willing to engage them. They clearly are lacking authority. If we are truly the community we all say we are maybe its time we all take a more vested interest in the development of all are youth. It wasn't so long ago that it was a village that raised kids.

This cracked me up: "...they might have backgrounds from Great Britain where your grandfather took them from."

I learn something new every day!

Peace-corps anon wrote: "Frankly, this is one thing I really think Obama has an ability to do as president because he is in the position to be able to make that argument and start pressuring the African American community to get its act together."

I didn't vote for the guy, but Anon's comment reflects one thing that I think we should all hope for as a positive outcome of the Obama presidency.

However, the cynic in me suspects that what will actually happen is that the black "poverty industry" will ratchet up their demands for entitlements.

And this is one issue on which I have to disagree with Blind-Mind. By any objective metric, criminality is much higher in the West Grove. I remember when the Sailing Club tried to extend a youth program to underprivileged kids from the West Grove. Unfortunately, the program had to be killed because the kids (without exception) were stealing or trying to steal everything that wasn't nailed down.

so swilp should I just assume who you voted for? the black poverty industry? give me a break you sound ignorant to the fullest.. Obama can not fix all the mess that Bush made and I don't expect him to.

Grow up and educate yourself

swilp you last comment, so what, some kids do steal some don't DON'T LABEL a whole neighborhood for some, that's like labeling a whole race. It's 2009 and the same idiotic and hateful rhetoric still exists and you have spewed plenty of it on this topic.

Facts are stubborn things, as John Adams once said. It is simply a fact that crime is much higher in the West Grove.

If by "ignorant" you mean that I refuse to bury my head in the sand, then I'd say it's a fair cop.

I have thousands of beautiful art tile pieces that can legally be sold from sidewalks and parks throughout the Grove including West Grove and anyone; black, white, yellow or brown can earn a decent profit, probably a minimum of about $250.00, weekly. When I included such a proposal to bring art into the entire Grove area I was issued 6 code violations. Anyone out there can tell these kids to contact Jobie Steppe @ 305-447-6526, pick up some of these tiles and try it and if they can't sell them to people in the Grove just return them to me in the same condition. I purchased these beautiful colorful art tiles to help the Grove so lets give these kids an opportuntity to earn some money and self-respect and maybe help their families and at the same time make this a better community by reaching out to others.

Hey Anon @ 7:38, I'm Anon 6:23.
Why would you assume I was talking about Black's,African's, or Kid's from the west Grove?? I never said anything of the sort! How dare you!
It's those Damn Swedish Gang's from Coral Gable's that i was talking about!!!Pasty faced little trouble maker's! No Discipline, that's the problem! They watch Scarface in Sweden and they come here thinking the world is their's for the taking! They only came here to the Grove after they stole all the Hair gel in the Gables!!

My apologies to any law abiding swedish youngster's that were offended! I only discriminate against thieving punk's and Criminal's and on occasion the dopey people that use the fact that they should be treated with compassion because one or more of their ancester's might have been brought here against their will 300 year's ago!!(your arguement not mine!)I know my Irish/Austian ancestor's did not bring them here cause they were not here at the time. They're not responsible for the aforementioned Swedish Gang problem's in South Florida either as far as I know.(Last one Grape, I promise!)

Here's an idea for you: Why has this same type of problem been going on for YEARS (not just recently)? I am wondering if the kids tell other kids the scams at school or in the neighborhood & the cycle continues. attempting to catch one kid or another won't make scamming go away. Do any schools, (not just in the grove) have any programs or outreach that they share with the community & businesses to deter this behavior? If so, that would be a good starting point...Dave Collins knows that this is an ongling problem, its happened right in his own store several times in the past...

If you spend any time up by Coco Walk, you have seen these kids. They approach my husband and I all the time. They are little black kids about 10 - 12 years old. Not being racist, just a fact. The paper they carry around looks like it has been in their hands for the last 10 months its crumbled beyond recognition. Last time they asked for money my husband asked the kids where his mother was, that he could't possibly be wandering the Grove alone. The kid literally ran away from us when asked about his parent.
