They all have another vision after hearing his vision

When the vision is left to government officials' imaginations, then do not have any high expectations. In fact, only expect higher taxes and lower services. This is the natural tendency of government in action.
Regarding comments for the original blog on this issue several days ago. Would love it if the Grove was really cool, funky, and hip. Maybe 30 years ago it was but Chili's, Hooter's, Cheesecake Factory, Victoria' Secret...really cool Grove places? Let's get real. The Grove has some charm due to "upscale" places like Greenstreets, George's, Le Petite Paris, various art galleries, and other independent shops and restaurants. Unfortunately, the grove is mainly a great place for undergraduates who wand cheap beer and for gullible tourists. Wouldn't a club that played cool live music or a theater that showed independent and foreign films be hip and more true to the Grove??
As it stands, upscale seems far more attainable than real hip and funk. Which this whole city lacks in very BIG way
You need to visit the Speak Easy for that. It's above Boardwalk pizza.
The problem with real hip and funk is that it needs low rent to survive ... and our Coconut Grove landlords want high rent which they can get from the chains. Every hip neighborhood ends up selling out to its own success. Then the cycle turns. We're at the turning point. If our landlords are willing to recognize that having a tenant at a lower rent than the last one is better than no tenant, we will be on our way back to hip and funky!
Dear Anon,
Apparently the Speakeasy was too hip. City officials made it clear they did not want them there and now they are gone.
When did the speakeasy close?
I have lived in the Grove for 12 years and it is a special place that unfortunately lacks a meaningful identity anymore. Why should S. Miami, Gables, and Brickell be of more interest to those that really spend money? The Grove is sooo much more unique. At least right now we have a commissioner who is trying to make a positive change (IMO), and I commend that effort. There will always be people opposing change...big deal.
Coconut Grove landlords charge far too much. They are largely responsible for the crappy national chain retailers who have pushed out the independent retailers. Sad.
The few retailers and restaurants that remain in the Grove struggle. There are not enough paying customers to justify the landlords high rents.
Greedy landlords caused the South Beach of the mid-1980's to early 1990's to be lost to the crass commercialization that exists today.
