The Strut nuts received their funding -- but just barely

The King Mango Strut was almost shut out yesterday when it came to funding from the BIC (Business Improvement Committee). The Strut likes to be bohemian and do things their way, but when it comes to begging for money, you have to do it "the man's" way.

Glenn Terry, the main Mangohead, was unable to attend so he sent Strut member Cynthia Shelley in his stead. But the last minute budget was not attached to the Strut application which made it incomplete. Luckily estranged Mangohead Antoinette Baldwin came to the rescue with her own complete budget, just in case (Sarah Palin to the rescue). I guess she knows how flighty the Mangoheads can be.

Other organizations asking for budget money were not pleased. They felt that they had to jump through hoops, work for months on their budgets and then just have the Strut people, well, strut in totally unorganized and ask for money, no fuss, no muss at the 11th hour.

Luckily those in attendance fought to keep the Strut alive or they would have left empty handed. But it turns out the powers that be (the BIC) handed over the $15,000 needed so the mighty King Mango Strut can go on. I see it as a funny "I Love Lucy" episode, those in attendance did not.

One event did leave the folks at the meeting stunned: Cynthia Shelley walked out minutes before the vote. She just up and said she had another meeting or something and she walked out to everyone's surprise. The whole room was left with their mouths open, scratching their heads. No one is sure what that was about, but usually when you are begging for money, it's a good idea to stick around to accept the duly begged for money.

The BIC committee members are Monty Trainer, Marshall Steingold, Mia Stierheim, Frank Couzo, Lalo Durazo, Sweetpea Ellman, and Ron Jack.

Monty's group, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival was asking for money yesterday, too, so of course Monty recused himself from that vote (of course they got the money, $20,000 I believe) and also asking for money was the Great Taste of the Grove and a small stipend went to the fund that puts carollers and musicians on the streets at Christmas time.

So everyone got their money, honey. Was there ever any doubt?

If the Strut wants to maintain some neo-hippy posture of not filling in all the blanks or submitting the required forms, so be it, but let them find funding elsewhere. If, on the other hand, they want to come hat-in-hand to the BIC, then as a matter of simple respect they ought to be able to follow instructions. The whole sanctimonious bit about not having sponsors is meaningless if it requires a dependency on the public dole.

Wow! I really agree with that prior comment. Being responsible doesn't mean you can't be irreverant.

This article of yours was so one-sided. The Strut people submitted an application (with a general budget) and all "required forms" in October. It was accepted then by the City. The BIC people had copies of that six weeks ago. The Mango parade people do a pretty good job of running an organization with no paid staff. People who think they need to do their work better should volunteer to help, to help to do it better.
Also, it is true that this 'non-sponsored" bit is an illusion. BIC, generous donations, and a lot of hard working volunteers "sponsor" the event.
